An art teacher friend who retired from Arlington Public Schools told me that sculpture was part of a series of sculptures done for various schools years ago. We have one in Reston too – which is a whole different school district and County!
Here’s a link to ours which will provide some info about the artist in case anyone is interested. https://publicartreston.org/project/stabile/
An artist, a teacher and a 4th grade art class creating public art. How cool is that?!!!!

I cheated (but not on purpose). I uploaded this art yesterday without a bike in it. I will remove yesterday’s tag, and this is legit for today.
+ 1 extra point for self-policing and going legit #publicartfinder!

Cool – thanks! Now this makes me want to go visit all the local schools to see what other art I can find.

Mark your calendars if you want to join this public art ride in Reston on Saturday, Feb. 13. We will start at North Point Village Center, 1452 Reston Parkway, and ride just under 12 miles. But what a 12 miles! At two different locations there are multiple pieces, and in between are some additional stops for other cool artwork. In total, there are more than 15 works.
Social distance and mask requirements will be in place, and we don’t leave anyone behind.
I’m not going to set a start time until I see the forecast temps. Freezing Saddles doesn’t have to mean voluntary popsicle-hood!
I will also put in a thread in the main page at some point. I figure this most appeals to those playing this pointless prize game.
If you need good bike directions to the start from the W&OD or Wiehle-Reston Station, let me know.
Here is the route. No guarantees I won’t tweak it before then, especially if I find something new to add!

I am in. Not sure if I will drive or ride to the meeting point though. Thanks for organizing!

ParticipantBranching out to Arlington, the polka dot mural on the wall of Continental Lounge. This one is sort of interesting in that it was commissioned by the developer rather than an art commission. It makes for a colorful wall!

Participant#PublicArtFiinder – Columbia Gardens Cemetery, Arlington, VA. I’m not sure if this qualifies, but this memorial stone was just so exquisite, I figured everybody would want to see it.

Participant#PublicArt Finder – ColorPlay by by Stephen Canneto on Fallsgrove Rd and Fallsgrove Dr in Rockville behind the shopping center.

Artist’s Statement: This sculpture is inspired by Rockville’s historically strong community foundation. Its’ contemporary, sleek stainless steel figures evoke the timeless traditions of people joining together across generations. They work and play in cooperative spirit while meeting challenges of the moment. The colored-glass and stainless steel sphere symbolizes those challenges as the opportunities that life presents.
This is one of my favorites as it looks like a family just having fun and enjoying the world.January 23, 2021 at 4:02 am #1110047tomacsh

PÉTALOS REFLEJANTES (REFLECTIVE PETALS) by Wilfredo Valladares, a refugee from Honduras who got his start in art at neighboring Montgomery College (sculpture at 8543 Georgia Ave).
Across the street (1 Inventa Place) we have:
Unattributed metalwork evoking nautilus shells, made from diecut sealife shapes. A remnant of Discovery HQ perhaps? Or new work by the take-over tenant, the inter webs do not tell me the answer and I cannot recall!Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I think most of them were in Arlington — we have only the 1 in Reston and it’s at Hunters Woods Elementary School, about 3 miles from the W&OD accessible via bike lanes and wide paved multi-use paths!

Participant1/23/21 – “Echo” in Penrose Square, Arlington, VA
“Echo” by Richard Deutsch. This interactive sculpture is inspired by the Three Sisters radio towers, formerly located near Columbia Pike and Courthouse Rd. The concave elliptical parabolas carved into each monolith reflect and project sound, allowing words spoken into one stone to be heard by listeners at the other.
