You say potato, I say patato. As been stated here ad naseum, no one objects to things like the ELF replacing cars in an appropriate location. Over and done with this thread. Will put it on my ignore list (does such a thing exist, or is it just certain posters?).

I would ignore me if I were on the opposite side of common sense, too, but my guess is you’d rather condemn pedal travel to the effete, recreational, overpriced-brand-name-Chinese bike, stretch pants crowd, than have it actually displace ICE travel. Maybe there are many in that area of the country who are deathly afraid that a year round, all weather, fun, healthy alternative to the automobile could seriously cramp the styles of some pretty powerful forces in this country. I have had no negative reaction to my ELF in Minnesota, only smiles, waves, curiosity, and people wanting to ride it.

(Yes, I take it on bike paths all the time)

You know nothing about the community that is this forum, as is clear from your rants to us. All of the things you tout about the ELF are things that many of us do on “regular” bikes all the time: hauling cargo (with racks, on cargo bikes, with box bikes, or with trailers), riding year round in all weather (including rain, snow, ice, and dark of night), and in some cases living a truly car-free life. This is not the community you think it is, and your pontificating to us makes you look like an ass.

And if you say “Chinese” one more time I think I will actually barf.

Unlike many far over priced Chinese bike riders, with their designer, pocketless, stretch pants, bike gloves, and ridiculously cleated bike shoes, the average ELF user can actually use his bike to replace a car.

Dear God, are you that completely out of touch? You’re talking to dozens of people (who are part of a larger group of thousands more in this city alone) who do just that.

America’s only hope for sustainable, USABLE, (repeat USABLE) practical, healthy, transportation on all MUP’s.

    LOL.

You thought wrong. Stay as healthy a possible, as you’re helping to close the door on daily, all weather pedal power’s last, best hope, especially for those not in the peak of health

Your posterity will be very proud. Outsourced, Communist Chinese bikes can once again ply the paths of the suburbs of our nation’s capitol unmolested by “Big American ELF”. Way to go. Some day, you WILL be defensive, maybe even ashamed, of the position you’ve taken on this seemingly insignificant matter. It’s only a matter of time. Go ahead and laugh. But it’s true.

You know some of us actually believe in comparative advantage and free trade. Others who support buying locally, do not appreciate the cynical use of “buy american” as a marketing tool. Others how are fine with such cynical usage, buy bikes from Shinola, which are even made in Detroit.

I am in my mid 50s. I pedal to stay as healthy possible, but if I find I need it as I age, I will consider an electric assist bike. It will not need to be an ELF, and I will ride it where it is welcome.

Do they make P.V. assisted Kurzweil readers?

You might want to look at the globally sourced components on your Elf. From the crank set to the plastic it is wrapped with it is assembled from things made elsewhere. Long after the batteries and P.V. panel have failed and gone into the waste stream my equally globally sourced but assembled in the US (by a genuine Murcian’) bike will still be fully able to convey me and my stuff to and from work as it does 5 days a week year round. All 6 of my bikes cost less than your one Elf. Some of us don’t have over $5000 for a electric car. The people on this board are not a bunch of summer weekend only types, we ride year round and all over. Your experience in MI is yours and is perhaps not unexpected in an area where there might be less riders and more space . Here in the northern VA area we have many riders and walkers and runners on the trail in question. The W&OD is not just a MUP it is a regional park. In fact the trail in question is one of if not the most traveled MUPs in the US. This is an example of usage data from way back in 2003 to 2004

“A representative sampling procedure described above was used to obtain 1,426 completed questionnaires from trail users between May 2003 and April 2004. Information from completed questionnaires was combined with on-site summer visitor counts at various trail segments to arrive at an annual estimate of adult visits (aged 16 and older) of 1,707,353. Of this number 5.24% or 89,807 of the visits, amounting to 33,262 group trips were from users living outside the northern Virginia area. The remainder of the visits, 1,617,546, were from local residents.” Locals using the trail comprised over 90% of the usage. Not weekenders arriving via car and unloading $8000 carbon bikes in order to ride to lunch at the winery. No, local folks going to and from here and there. All walks of life in all sizes and colors. Plus one guy that feels the need to take a banned device on the trail. What paths do you use and what are the usages levels on them?

A 44 mile long 10 foot wide trail with over 1.6 million usages per year. I can assure you that the usage has only gone up in the past 11 years since this information was compiled. No one is saying the Elf is a bad idea. In this case on this MUP which is in this park it is inappropriate. The owner on this Elf has been told not to use his elf on the trail by the trail management. There is an extensive a road system in the area that the Elf is legally permitted to use.

Enjoy your electric car and the positive reaction you get where you are. Don’t think for a second that you invented earth friendly travel or that the conditions here are similar to yours and the people somehow different.

    LOL.

Are you all training for the Olympics? Face it, you and your lousy overpriced, Chinese Cannodales are a fashion statement, a diversion, a recreation, a tribute to consumerist idiocy, and, ironically, a symbol of the victory of Communism, right next to our capitol. Alexander Hamilton is rolling in his grave, Why don’t you walk right over and put another bullet in his corpse, while your at it? What kind of jobs do you all have that allows you to shower and change clothes before you start work? I just hope hard working, tax paying Americans like myself aren’t subsidizing that stupidity.

GIVE ME A U.S. MADE ELF, OR GIVE ME DEATH!!

(No cheap cracks. They won’t be funny. And I wear the dislikes from the Chinese Cannondale, stretch pants crowd as a badge of honor. Thanks to each one of you)

I have officially clicked the black triangle on this. This thread needs to be killed.

This is the stupidest thing I’ve read on the internet in years, and I browse reddit and read youtube comments.

Are you kidding me? It’s beyond awesome and I am fully entertained.

I hope I get the chance to say “kinetic devotion to consumerist idiocy” at some point today.

Clearly the crazy trash talk by OneLessCar (grammar be damned) calls for an endurance trial.

Who can travel further in a single ride, an ELF rider, or someone riding a Communist fashion statement, I mean, a normal bicycle? I think that would settle things quite nicely.

Most people I know shower and get dressed before work. Just FYI. Maybe that’s your problem.
