Someone obviously needs to make carbon fatbike rims.

    Ask and ye shall receive.

The electric Felt fatty is also pretty nifty. It’s two-thirds of the way toward what I really want, a FAT electric cargobike!

Possibly the ultimate commuter bike (at least at a non-fantasy price) for many people?

Devinci Newton — Canadian made aluminum bike from the people who make CaBi/Citibike/Bixi bikes.

Dynamo hub powers full internal front and rear (and side) lights.
    Hydro disk brakes
    Internal cable routing
    Kickstand friendly steering stops
Plenty of mounts for rack, fenders — good clearance for wider or narrower tires
    Lots of high vis features
Pretty lightweight and quick for a hybrid

This bike rode very comfy, with nice tracking at higher speeds and good handling at low speeds. Good gearing range and performance (the prototype I tested had 105s I think).

    Two thumbs up!

It’s an absurd indulgence, but I’m pretty sure I want one of these fancy Peloton Cycle spin bikes with a big Android tablet integrated. With the cold and dark coming on I’d started to do a few spin classes at Biker Barre in the new neighborhood. I’ve really enjoyed them but they’re both pricey and bloody hard to book in advance. Being able to stream a live or recorded class on your own schedule seems really cool. And way more fun than yet another long winter on the turbo trainer.

While you can look at the others suffering inside, wouldn’t it be much nicer to have a bike’s eye view of an outdoor tour synchronized with computer controlled resistance of the terrain you are traversing? Something like this or maybe this?

The solution to the trainer is to join Freezing Saddles …. It’s actually relatively mild around here and with the right gear is downright pleasant (empty trails!). Of course, all the right gear might end up costing as much as that trainer! :)

    Fixed.

I tried a trainer for a while and found it miserable and boring. I don’t care how much cold weather gear costs, its worth it to not have to sit inside and spin a trainer.

The problem with the outdoor riding in winter is more the lack of light than the cold. I hate being out with traffic in the dark, even lit up like a Christmas tree. It’s okay downtown for my commute, which is mostly bike lanes and slower streets. But further out (especially east of the river) I worry people aren’t looking out for you. And don’t even get me started on the ninja runners. The ART is ten kinds of dark in places and no one uses lights.

The bike looks nice. But given the cash flow problems of Bixi, I would be worried about the financial stability of that company. Are they separate from Bixi? Or are they a part of the company/local gov’t? I don’t care that much about whether the city/provincial gov’t owns them, but I do care whether they go bankrupt and wreck the progress of bikesharing here, and across the U.S. and in other countries.

The cold is going to limit my outdoor riding. I’ll do some CaBi rides and the occasional (fake) MTB ride. But I’ll switch things up and do some spin bike workouts (on my own, when there aren’t any classes going on). I also spend more of my exercise time on strength training over the winter. Plus I’d like to do a lot more swimming and some running too.

Have no knowledge of the business health of Devinci, just a comment that I used to occasionally ride part of the way home on my commutes with a woman who worked at the Canadian Embassy. She had a Devinci road bike that she used for her commute and triathlons and was way faster than me, even on my Salsa (but which isn’t all that fast …).

Devinci is one of the big Canadian bicycle companies. A well established company before contracting with Bixi to supply bike share bikes.

Yup, they build the bikes for CaBi and CitiBike too, as well as the London bikeshare I think.
