I was going to ride it to work today, but then I saw that it’s supposed to rain this afternoon. I’m not doing this right, am I?
It’s okay to want the first rides on a new bike to be somewhat pristine. I’m a firm believer that a new bike will never quite be the same after its first ride flogging in a rain storm. It is somewhat odd to think of a bicycle having a sense of virtue, or virginity. There is, however, something that you never can quite get back after riding a bike in rainy, muddy conditions… no matter how much you clean. I tend to think it IMPROVES a bike to ride it in such conditions… Please keep in mind that is a social statement about bicycles only….
My bikes each have a soul or identity…. they exist in my (well helmeted) brain. That soul or identity is made up of all the interesting places I’ve gone with that bike and all the wacked-out death march rides that we’ve gone on together. I’ve got a lot of bikes to choose from when I go to leave the house every morning. Anyone who has ridden with me a few times has heard me say, “DANG I’ve forgotten how much I love riding this bike!”. Part of that relates to the sieve-like nature of my brain. Most of it comes from the cumulative memories of my experiences with a particular bike coming back to me in the first few miles of a particular bike ride.
Rock and roll, sir!
