These are nice l’il commuter bikes: http://blog.harriscyclery.com/two-womens-city-bikes-on-a-650-budget/

    The Bobbin Birdie is adorabus.

Of course I already HAVE a 35-pound upright-position bike to commute on, so there’s not much point in getting another one :)

It isn’t often that I find a bike from a major manufacturer to put on a covet list… Here’s the exception: http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bikes/multi-use/source/sourceeleven

I’m not happy because Specialized isn’t a company that I really like very much, though some of their products (particularly their helmets) are EXTREMELY good.

That is a very cool bike. Me likey.

What? A commuter bike that comes with commuting stuff on it? Where do they think we are, Europe?!

    Other Covet: http://www.boxcycles.com/index.php?splash=1

I need to go to BicycleSpace and look closely at one and see if the handlebar can be flipped around backwards.

So you could steer from the box?

We test rode the Christiana in London last year. It’s a trike, which is a bit different. I’m sure you’d get used to it, but it definitely was… different… to ride. I know you ride slower with a cargo bike, but I’d still be a bit worried with the trike on all the hills and curves in ARL. That said, the bike felt safe.

Just like my recumbent trike, it isn’t until you get it up on 2 wheels that the real fun begins. ;)

The warnings that came with my trike had all kinds of things that you should never do on it. That list included things like steering with the brakes, getting it up on 2 wheels (any two wheels), jumping, skidding, etc. I’m relatively sure that every ride that I’ve ever done on that trike has included at least 3, if not all of the listed things that should never be done on a recumbent trike. I don’t necessarily set out to do these things…. they just sort of happened.

That said, my expectations of how a Christiana handles is very, very realistic. It is designed to carry 100kg in the box + a rider. If I get one, I’m sure I will push it a LITTLE beyond what it was designed to do, but I don’t think it will be quite the crash-test-dummy-mobile that the recumbent trike has become for me.

PS: Oh yeah! I almost forgot my favorite no-no on the trike… Never corner so fast that you get it to slide or drift…. and REALLY don’t do that while up on 2 wheels. (In my own defense, that maneuver was only done once and only done to avoid a car that jumped a curb onto the off-street path I happened to be riding at the time. PURELY self defense. It was cool to know that such a move was not only possible, but survivable for all involved. Don’t try this stuff at home.

I think this would be my next commuter bike, if I needed a new commuter bike, which I don’t!

I really like the brakes and I’m fine with Tiagra — seems to work pretty reliably well when dirty/commutery/not-often-cleaned (although I’ve been having some issues since last Friday’s rainstorm).

I’m guessing that climbing over the bars and into the box while in motion would be one of those things that the company recommends not trying. Think how much more aerodynamic that would be though…. (Yes. I’m completely joking here.)

Dirt – I, like you, took a liking to this bike, even as, like you, I tend to shy away from The Great Corporate Behemoth that is Specialized. Talked to a couple of the high-end Specialized shops earlier this spring, and it turns out the Source Eleven is not really all that available. If one could even be ordered (and who buys a $3K bike without riding it first? Not even me.) there was no guarantee that one could be gotten. So I ride a much less cool (and undoubtedly heavier by orders of magnitude) commuter with a dynamo hub, etc. I’d just like to see more commuter bikes built up by bike companies – how about a Ridley cross bike with fenders and a dynamo hub, and that wonderful Supernova light? Oooo -sweet! Are you listening in Belgium?

I’ve been a HUGE fan of Geekhouse bikes for years. They do some very, very cool stuff. I loved their brazed-on, raised-letter logos. Very sweet design touch. Their color palate is also to my liking.

I’m heartbroken. They nuked the Globe Live III… and it would have been recalled and sacked anyways. The world hates me. ;)

(Oh! And I make it a practice to never buy more than one $3000+ bikes without riding or seeing it first each year.)
