There are two reasons the trail is between a sound wall and a highway. The first reason is that VDOT didn’t want to do a trail at all and didn’t put much effort into it. The second reason was that NIMBYs didn’t want a trail in their backyards, and that kept local political leaders from putting in much effort to try to get VDOT to make improvements.
That’s why I shall call it the NIMBY Trail.

Just bought myself a Christmas present from Performance (online, not in the store). I need something to replace my old 90s era Park work stand and was looking at a lot of different folding/portable stands. Got the Spin Doctor work stand. Normally $129.99. Interestingly, Amazon sells for less at $99.99 https://www.amazon.com/Spin-Doctor-Team-Bicycle-Stand/dp/B01CRF2EJK/ But with their Chapter 11 sale, Performance now selling for $69.99! https://www.performancebike.com/shop/bike-tools-transport/tools-workstands/workstands/spin-doctor-team-work-stand-40-4529 Even with a bulk item shipping charge and VA sales tax, still cheaper than Amazon by almost $20. Happy camper!
Bummer, the price for the Spin Doctor stand is back up to $99.99 at Performance online.

ParticipantThey are closing all their Brick & Mortar stores, but what about the online store? Is that also shutting down? Online prices don’t seem to be slashed by 30-50% at this time.

There is one a few yards West of Cedar Lane. I think it’s pretty new.
It’s 300 yards west of Cedar Lane at the spur that leads into the new Wedderburn development.

ParticipantThere is a water main break along the W&OD at Cedar Lane. Fairfax Water has been on the scene since at least 11 am, however, water is still flowing as of 4:30 pm.

Odd; it was working again later (~4:45pm) yesterday afternoon. I guess it is temperamental — or was just napping, sleeping in.
The crossing signal at Maple was working OK this afternoon at 2:45 pm.

The detour path looked pretty nice. We’ll see this afternoon.
I was annoyed that the walk signal at Maple wasn’t working (light wasn’t changing) this AM.
The walk signal at Maple/123 wasn’t working at 2:30 pm yesterday either. In addition, the signals at Park and Center streets normally turn red nearly simultaneously, but not yesterday. This made it difficult to find a gap in traffic to cross on red.

When I was at the Wiehle Road intersection with the W&OD at about 10:30 AM today, they had torn up the median in the middle of Wiehle. Signs were up saying that the sidewalk was closed which isn’t an exact description.
No signs said how one was supposed to detour, so things were a mess.
As of 2:10 pm today the crossing at Wiehle Ave is open again. They removed the 2-inch high curb that was obstructing the north and south few feet of the crossing. Now the entire width of the crossing is flush with the road, which will be much safer for bikes.

There’s a tiny extension of Mill on the opposite side from Caboose. Bobco’s map link (above) shows the spot. Google maps calls it Mill, at least…not sure if that’s what it is in real life.
OK, that makes sense. I thought that was just a parking area off Center St…didn’t know it was also named Mill St.

She got on at Mill St, just west of Caboose Brewing, and made it about halfway to Clarks Crossing. That’s a westbound trip.
How did she drive a car from Mill Street onto the W&OD trail? There is no entrance from Mill Street unless she drove through the bushes west of Caboose Brewing.

ParticipantCAUTION: At the W&OD crossing at Wiehle Ave. there is a new concrete landing area in the island at the center of the road. If you stay to the center of the landing area you are fine. However, it you cross to the left or right of center you will hit a 1 to 2-inch concrete curb. I was crossing this afternoon looking left and right for cars and was surprised when I hit the curb.

According the W&OD FB page, the trail has been plowed from Smiths Switch to just east of Hunter Mill, heading towards Vienna and then from the other direction (heading west) they’ve made it from Idylwood Park to Gallows and also heading towards Vienna. Hopeful the two plows will meet in the middle today and with the weekend warm up we’ll have clear-enough trails on Monday.
While walking the dog at 11:55 am today, we saw the snow blower clearing the section of the W&OD between Gallows Rd and Cedar Lane.

ParticipantMarch 1964, I got a Firestone 500 bike for my 10th birthday. Here I am taking it for a spin on its maiden voyage. Notice this was a Freezing Saddles ride.
