ParticipantSo that is why the police officers told me that there was “an incident” when I asked why part of the loop was closed when I went there at the end of a long ride.
It bothers me a bit that a lot of people walk on that road, often several people abreast, especially on weekends. However, where else can they go since sections of the path on the water’s edge are closed because of erosion. The maximum speed limit is 25 MPH which is on the Potomac side and on Buckeye Drive. It is 20 MPH on the Channel side and 15 MPH on the turn at the far end. The latter is exceeded by almost every car and most bikes.

I was around and a daily commuter in 2004. Honestly, I don’t recall them being an issue while riding. Wear your sunglasses I guess. Otherwise, it seems they either bounced off or were easily flicked away.
And even though they get huge media coverage, there aren’t really dense swarms of them like biblical locusts.I remember that they created a lot of noise, and in a few places there were a lot of dead ones on the ground, but I don’t recall any falling on me.

ParticipantI got an email a while ago and registered. You pick a time slot (I think a half-hour) when you will show up. I am pretty sure they limit how many in each slot.
This is the registration site https://www.biketoworkmetrodc.org/.

The new owners of the ferry, and the owners of the farm where the landing is, have not yet reached a meeting of the minds.
Sorry about the dislike. My error, although I dislike the progress.

ParticipantDoes anyone have an update on the status of White’s Ferry? The latest that I read was that it was sold and the new owners wanted to reopen it.

I’m surprised that it’s only 8%.
There are probably also other intersections in Addis Ababa without signals.

ParticipantA couple of years ago, I got a ticket for not coming to a complete stop while heading east on Buckeye Drive to turn right on Ohio Drive while doing the Hains Point loop. Thankfully that particular officer has left and throughout the pandemic there has been no trouble. After the ticket, I counted how many cars do that. More than half did not stop including those turning left on Ohio which requires crossing a road. I did not count the police cars which don’t have to obey the law. The worst offenders are the NPS maintenance vehicles and their contractors which virtually never stop.

the need to get to the left to make a left turn, etc, etc.
It’s off topic, but how is one supposed to make a left turn from a protected bike line on the right? I usually leave the PBL earlier and get to the left, but this requires me to know the PBL well. Making the left at the last minute requires a tight turn and often is impossible without stopping and waiting for a long time for a break in the traffic. It also angers others in the PBL who want to continue straight.

Isn’t that actually the Jerome Park Reservoir? Not that I have been that close to it in over 50 years.

ParticipantThe lines were being painted today on the block south of the Freeway and north of G St, SW for the 4th St bike lanes.

Tomorrow [that’s Thursday], work on the dual trails project in Falls Church will be moving to the section of trail between Spring St and Oak St. This area will be closed to traffic, so please follow the detour north to Lincoln Ave.

I hope that they remember to repave and paint from G St SW to the freeway when the construction on the east side is finished. Now the rest of 4th Street makes this block seem even more jarring than it used to seem.

So that’s why they built the little trail extension on the east side of Sandburg St. to Iliff Dr.
Did they also build an extension along Gallows? That seems more important than Sandburg. I can see from the tweet that they have made a bike lane along Iliff and put every bollard in northern VA to use.
Edit: Never mind. It is all explained here https://www.novaparks.com/parks/washington-and-old-dominion-railroad-regional-park/updates/wod-trail-detour-sandburg-st-to.

ParticipantAnother W&OD detour https://twitter.com/WODTrail/status/1310619472672284672
Starting on or around October 5th, Dominion Energy will begin performing major line work along the trail between Sandburg St and Gallows Rd in the Dunn Loring area. The construction is expected to continue well into next year and will require a detour of the trail onto Iliff Dr.
