ParticipantThe only annoying part about these “upgrades” is if you get the new groupset with more gears, you probably have to get new wheels too. If you’ve got a nice set of 11spd wheels, but then for whatever reason need to replace your groupset, you either have to buy an old groupset to match your old wheels, or buy new wheels to match your new groupset.

My Edge 820 also tells me who is sending the text and the first few words. Not sure if there is a correlation, but Komorebi mentioned she had an Android. I have an iPhone. What kind of phone do you have Judd?
I also wonder if it’s a Bluetooth LE/Smart thing. At least for me (on an iPhone), I have to pair both the BT and the BTLE (aka Bluetooth Smart) to get full notifications.

ParticipantAlternatively, a Garmin Fenix watch (and maybe some of the VivoActives?) can be a bike computer that will basically do everything an Edge 8xx will do, including text notifications. I have an older Fenix3 and it’s a great piece of gear.

ParticipantThere were three downed trees totally blocking the C&O just in the mile stretch between Fletchers and Chain Bridge. One was just barely ride-aroundable, but the other two required dismounting and carrying the bike over.

ParticipantMy commute is heavily tree’d and sees lots of downed branches even in routine storms…there’s also the issue of crossing the river. So yeah, I’ll take the bus.

ParticipantOh my god the Custis “detour” in Rosslyn is amazing! Can we just leave it the way it is permanently (restoring the path for peds, of course)?
TwoWheelsDC
ParticipantThis is part of my daily commuting route, but I didn’t roll through there until like 830 this morning…which would explain why no one was there.

ParticipantAs others have mentioned, when I ride in that area, I take the lane down Glebe rather than trying to ride down 41st. I’ve ridden down 41st and it’s more trouble than it’s worth. When I hit the switchbacks at the top of 41st, I usually will like half unclip from my left pedal (my dominant foot), just in case. I’ve had at least one close call where the path was still wet and debris-strewn after a storm and I slipped a bit. Didn’t need to put a foot down, but I was mentally prepared for it. I’ve encountered similar hills where my wheel spun out and I wasn’t prepared for it and ended up falling over.

Hey TwoWheels – weren’t you wearing a Rapha kit that last time I rode with you?
I only wear Rapha on days ending in “Y.”

ParticipantI bought my road bike from Freshbikes and had better customer service experiences with them than most other shops…definitely better than the one that seems to be so popular on this forum, which I stopped patronizing after like 3 bad experiences in a row. They were also able to fix a seized crankarm that other shops couldn’t, and they charged me less to actually fix it than another shop did just to attempt a fix. So I’m a little disappointed that they won’t be around if/when I’m looking for a new road bike.

I’ve always had a gripe with the fact that Strava’s heat maps show private activities, and the portions of activities within your privacy range. So I’m not surprised this eventually came up as a problem, and it’s something I hope Strava fixes somehow. When you live or bike somewhere that’s pretty busy, it’s likely not a major concern since it’s clearly not just you on the route. But if you have your privacy setting so that people can’t find your house, and you live somewhere that isn’t on a popular route, it can cause issues.
For example–see the below loop of my neighborhood on the freezing saddles heat map. It clearly shows a little inlet where I’ve started my garmin on my driveway.

Here’s what it looks like on Strava–where I have a privacy setting in place:
I’ve posted my home address on the forum before, so I’m not screaming about this for freezing saddles since 30 seconds of work on the forum could tell any of you where I live. But generally, I’d prefer things in my privacy zone not appear on heat maps, especially as my home isn’t on a popular route. I put the privacy setting up for a reason–I don’t generally want random Strava people knowing exactly where I live. So hopefully this issue causes Strava to re-think what data they show on heat maps.
I just discovered the little checkbox that is on by default that allows for “anonymous” sharing for heatmap purposes. That box is now unchecked…

ParticipantCan say from personal experience that special forces folks (and the military writ large) are shockingly bad at this type of opsec. “What do you mean I can’t wear my smart watch in the SCIF?!?”
TwoWheelsDC
ParticipantI don’t wear earbuds on my rides, but mostly because I find them a little cumbersome. But I really think the “dangers” of using them while riding are overstated. I have speakers in my motorcycle helmet though, which are awesome. Although it draws some weird looks at stop lights when I have Slipknot cranked up in my helmet and am singing along with songs like “The Devil in I,” but I’m the only one who can hear the music…

ParticipantMostly warm, but plenty of pockets of really cold (relatively) air…especially along the river and 4MR.
