Update:

“There will be one closure and detour required near Sycamore Street behind the Metro Station and DVP substation. They will request a closure when they are closer to the location. This is the same location that is closed each cycle.

Elsewhere on the trail we can expect the job sites to impede traffic, but the trail will be open. As in the past, a work zone will be established and flaggers will safely manage traffic.

Work in Arlington County is expected to be complete by the end of February/1st week of March. The entire project is expected to be completed by mid-April.”

    Cold Weather Biking Tips: Infographic!

Scared of riding in the winter? Winter in DC really isn’t that bad. 2015’s winter only had 14 days that it actually snowed, and 16 days that there was snow on the ground. 93% of winter days had a high above freezing, and 66% of winter days had a low above freezing. Here’s the blog post.

Venturing out into the snow? Here are some equipment and technique tips!

I believe that body of water to the west of the GWMP near DCA is called Roaches Run. It would be in your immediate sightline from this location between you and the Washington Monument.

    Update:

“Unfortunately, we had technical difficulties in preparing for the pipe installation across 2nd Street N. As such we will not be closing roadway in that location today. In an effort to honor our construction suspension for the holidays, we will reschedule the 2nd Street N closing for January 5 through 12. We have expanded the timeframe as a precaution and will endeavor to have the closure completed prior to the 12th.

All detours will remain the same and electronic and other signage will be placed on January 2. Thank you and have a great holiday season.”

What, are you from the provinces or something? It’s call a “cowl neck” you lycra-wearing-farmer of questionable sartorial choices…

The back story on this picture is that the UPS guy has requested a bike map from us twice in the past 10 years.

Also, heads up, I’m going to be on vacation and not really checking the forum or my email. If you’ve got problems over the next week or two, please check in with Henry, our adorable BikeArlington Junior Admin.

    Discussed here: http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?11335-December-2016-Road-and-Trail-Conditions

NPS has a meeting with WABA and other concerned folks at the BikeArlington offices tomorrow night where they have said that they have a big announcement. We expect it will be snow clearing related.

Wow… There are 38 registrants who registered without a valid forum ID. Several of these are folks that participated last year…

If someone registered on the forum last year, but then did not post a single post, they would automatically be removed after 6 months. We get a lot of spam registrations so it’s a way of keeping the forum running smoothly.

It’s called selective attention. Make sure to have your speakers on to hear the instructions: Count the basketball passes.

We need more people who drive cars to also be people who ride bikes.

I’m sorry I missed this; I live at the top of Superman Hill. Did anyone suggest/is it feasible for the current Four Mile Run Trail to have an spur behind the Exxon on Shirlington Road? It would give a more direct route to the W&OD trailhead and the bike lane on Shirlington Road, though it is private property.

    We heard something even better:

Bridges! Flyover bridges along that route making the connection above grade!

Yeah, I guess I am thinking of stuff closer to the city and further west. The rural roads are closer (to me in Arlington, anyway). The offshoots of MacAurthur and then of River Rd — and then west of Seneca for the rural stuff — are typically where the area’s roadie groups ride. Until you get to Loudon it’s hard to find similar quality riding in this side of the river, IMO. And getting to Loudon means riding the W&OD which rules it out for road group rides.

Agreed. West of the DC, MD has better roads closer to the city. In VA you have to go further west to get to that type of riding. Don’t try riding in MD east of the city.
