ParticipantI think Mia needs to pay him a visit in the hospital. Pibble slobbers are very therapeutic.
I’m cracking up at the disparity between his FB post (“oh it’s just some road rash”) and his wife’s (“NOT!”) [paraphrasing].
Tania
ParticipantYup. The new version too.
Granted, I suck at changing tires. I was able to get my 35mm Sammy Slicks on there mostly ok but struggled getting the Pro4s (23?) off and totally gave up trying to get them back on. But even Dirt put forth some serious effort mounting them so I feel a teeny bit better. He also showed me a trick to using the levers to get the tires seated on the rim (I destroyed my tube in the process, sigh).
I will absolutely buy those levers, thanks!

ParticipantI almost always ding! my approach and say “last one!” as I’m passing as part of a group. Because it’s usually true.

Good feedback that Tania enjoyed enough to come back for seconds.
You make it sound like I’m really hard to please!
Tania
ParticipantBumping this because I really enjoyed the last ride AND I have lights now. OK, four sets of lights.

Will MMPC meet this Monday?
I’m in. IIRC, they WERE open Memorial Day, just a little later than normal.

ParticipantI suspect I’ll get dropped and then lost so the Antietam ride sounds like a better option for me.
Tania
ParticipantGah. I’m torn between this and the Antietam Ride. Thoughts?

I recently bought a second bike and am in the market for headlight for riding along the MVT at night – so I want a “to see with” light, and not just a “to be seen with” light. I’ve heard conflicting information on how much credence I should give to the claimed lumens rating – for example, a 650 lumen Cygolite may be about $80 or more, but there are lights with a higher claimed lumen rating for a lot less on Amazon. I also need to consider factors such as beam width, battery life (and not blinding oncoming cyclists).

WHY WHY WHY did they not have lights or safety gear?!?!?!
Lots of reasons. The victim was identified today as only being here for the summer to work to support his family back in Jamaica. Maybe he didn’t have access to a car and relied solely on his bike for transportation to/from the pool where he worked as a lifeguard, maybe he didn’t normally work late and never needed lights in summer, maybe his lights failed, maybe he had lights but left them at home in his bag with his lunch, etc. In hindsight, none of these are good excuses. Hopefully the rest of us can learn from his family’s loss and work harder to make ourselves that much more visible. Like someone else pointed out, twilight is a dangerous time for bikers and pedestrians.

ParticipantThere was a guy on S Four Mile Run Drive Tuesday night at around 7:50 pm (just as it’s solidly twilight) on the road (not the trail) fully kitted out on a sleek racing bike with no rear or front lights. I almost didn’t see him (I was driving) but was able to change lanes. As I passed him, I saw that he did have a weak blinky on the SIDE of his bike and only visible from the side.
(I also saw more than a few cars on 50 without their lights on…)
I have a few rear lights on my bike (at all times) and now that the daylight is waning I keep a front light in my pack and a spare at work. I also have the flexible wrap-around-your-frame lights in hot pink and purple that I’ll stick on for winter commuting. You can mock me for that but no one can say they didn’t see me…

I really wanted to point out his hypocrisy regarding the how he promotes the Hilly Bill Roubaix on his media outlet. I have no personal problem with how that organization is run, however, that organization celebrates negative stereotypes of white people living in rural West Virginia. Just look at all the negative stereotypes captured in their logo: https://www.bikereg.com/VirtualImages/EventLogos/26404.png
My entire family is from rural southern West Virginia (almost Kentucky). Except for that stupid hat, the logo is pretty spot on. 😮

ParticipantMy commute in today gave me my fastest average speed (15.1 mph) and my quickest time (54:55)! I wasn’t even really pushing it (too muggy, trail too busy etc).
Wheeeeeeeeee!
Except now I want a nap.

ParticipantQuote:2. Drive part way, and ride the restI used to do this when I lived in Frederick and worked in Herndon. I’d drive to Leesburg, park in a commuter lot near the W&OD and bike on in!
