A few ideas:
Kona Rove (comes in aluminum, steel or titanium) and price ranges from $850-$5000
Jamis Renegade (available in aluminum, steel or carbon) and price ranges from $800-4300
Raleigh Willard, Tamland or Roker (aluminum, steel and carbon respectively) ranging in prices from $1300-$5000
Volagi Viaje (steel or ti) ranging in prices from $1800-$5000+
Surly Straggler (steel) at around $1800 or as a frameset to build as you like
Salsa Warbird (Aluminum or Carbon) with prices from $1600-4300
Salsa Vaya (steel or ti) — Originally designed as a light touring bike, but it makes a LOVELY all-rounder. Prices from $1500-$5000I have the carbon Salsa Warbird and will imminently have the steel Rove if you’d like to see either bike in person. I can’t say enough about the Warbird – internal routing, disc brakes and clearance for up to 42. Plus it’s just fun to ride and makes me want to go fast.

I will be attending, making my first foray across the Key Bridge. Returning to Reston for anyone making the westward trek into Fairfax County via the WOD (or maybe should just camp out at Java Shack for coffee the next morning).
I will take you up on this offer if I don’t decide to be lazy and take metro home.

ParticipantI wish I had the ladyballs to ride like that. It looks like a stupid amount of fun and that’s the very best kind.

I think a TT bike would be more practical. Or do you guys drive the fatbikes out to WV just to ride in appropriately wintery conditions?
I rode a carbon Salsa Beargrease at the Wakefield demo day a few weeks ago. They’re a stupid amount of fun on single track and this bike climbed surprisingly well (no issues getting up to the top of the berms). If the Jamis Renegade I ordered (for a commuter) doesn’t come in soon, I’ll probably cancel that order and get the Beargrease. If the Jamis does finally arrive, I’ll probably get the Beargrease anyway.
It’s a stupid, stupid bike. But I laughed the entire time I rode it.

ParticipantI thought the mention of moose mitts was a joke? Is there serious talk of excluding people based on their choice of winter gear? (Which is about the stupidest thing I’ve read on this forum…) Am I going to be excluded for wearing Lake boots too? Is this about riding our bikes to seeing who’s the most hard core?

It is a fun athletic competition. An athletic competition for people who would never enter a serious bike competition (as well as a few who would) It ain’t the Tour de France, or even the Air Force Cycling Classic, but it sure is about testing and stretching what we can do physically.
Pretty sure solarbikedude was being facetious when he asked if it was a serious competition…

There are also degrees of shoaling. Doing it at a red light when no one is moving is bad. Doing it as the light turns green is not only spectacularly rude but also dangerous. But perhaps the worst is when you shoal someone faster than you. I’ve had people do it to me three straight lights on 15th NW. My favorite thing to do to shoalers is to draft them up hills on the cargo bike because that’s more satisfying than whacking them with my water bottle.
Had a guy (full kit that matched his bike) do this to me (cotton tee shirt, baggy shorts and a camelbak) at a light on Williamsburg and so I drafted him on every uphill. He’d lose me on the downs but I could easily catch up to him on the ups. He got a big smile at each stop light too.

That’s more than a cracked windshield…Holy crap.

ParticipantThis is a big concern of mine (I’m fairly small) when biking to/from work. Awesome.
