Not sure I can make it all the way down to Falls Church, but I could probably meet you at the Custis spur if that would help. Otherwise, I will be riding straight from Fairlington to Georgetown.

That works! I’ll message you tomorrow after my appt.

Anyone riding down from Falls Church-ish area?

I work downtown but I have a quasi-emergency dentist appt at 2pm out in Fairfax and I know that getting back on my bike to ride another 28 miles roundtrip while numb and drooling isn’t likely to happen on my own…

Holy cannoli I love this weather. Planned to get up at 5 to bike in early (so I can leave early and be out of DC before twilight) but multiple fire alarms over night meant I slept in. Decided to metro but they were having issues so biked in late. Glorious and a fair amount of fellow bikers out there today. Met a nice gentleman on his first ride back after being posted overseas for the past few years on his ride from Falls Church to the IMF. Nice chatting with you if you’re on the forums! Flyby of Dickie and consularrider on his fat bike (seriously, HOW did I not recognize you?!?) and strava tells me I passed Rockford too.

Most of my clothes are hanging up to dry because I over-layered. Gloves are on the heating vent (they’re soaked).

First ride in the Alpineduro’s – they kept my feet warm up until about 50 minutes into the ride when I could just start to feel the cold. I suspect that’s because my feet were sweaty (along with the rest of me).

I have the Pearl Izumi elite mtb shoe covers which are supposed to be pretty good but I wore them on a three or four hour ride in that underperforming nor’easter we had back in September and my feet were soaked (as was the rest of me except for my head, thanks to a plastic bag from Target). That might not have been the best test for them (long ride, steady rain, purposefully riding through puddles on C&O), but the thought of putting on wet shoes to ride home in isn’t pleasant. I guess the easiest (and cheapest) thing to do would be to stash some wool socks and a few more of the Target bags here at work and wear them inside my shoes and over the dry wool socks for ride home if they’re wet from ride in.

Getting cold and wet on a ride is fine. Starting the ride already cold and wet means I’ll probably punk out and metro home.

If we believe in winter, perhaps it will come.

…but in the meantime, I’m browsing rain gear – waterproof covers for my regular commuter shoes and waterproof gloves. Yesterday’s mist/light rain wasn’t much of a test for the gloves I’ve got although they did well.

    Lake 303’s ($182), Alpineduro’s ($125) and Northwave’s ($114) an additional 30% off at Nashbar right now.

    I have the Jamis Renegade

Way jealous. I had an Exploit on order (for a commuter/backup steel bike) but there was no definitive delivery date. I cornered the local Jamis rep who happened to be in the store when I stopped by and even HE couldn’t tell me if it would arrive anytime soon (and he was aware I’d order a different brand if I couldn’t get a delivery date).

So went with a Rove ST.

Registered #2 on the Rosslyn counter this morning. Early, drizzly, and lots of folks not working, I guess.

Unless I know FOR SURE that a car is going to stop for me (as in, they’ve already stopped as I approach the trail crossing because they see me/others coming), I’ll stop and put down a foot. I’ve been practicing track stands but then I realized that makes drivers nervous since they can’t tell what I’m about to do.

I’d say about 80% of the time, drivers will stop in advance of me and then it’s waves, smiles and nods of thanks all around. I do appreciate it.

I will do a slow rolling Idaho stop if it’s obviously clear and safe. Most of my stop-signed trail crossings but one (Virginia Lane – sight lines, speed limit) are pretty stress-free.

There have been two days in Dec where I remember wishing I’d put the covers on my shoes (sette commuters, wool socks). For whatever reason, my feet get cold easily when biking and I LOVELOVELOVELOVE LOVE cold weather.

Honestly, if I could have found those burly moon boot looking 45NRTH’s, I would have bought those too.

Me too, Steve. They’re half the price of CK, $200 less than Whites and not that much heavier. Not to mention they’re easier to service than the Kings and will outlast the Whites.

I only wish I’d bought this second set sooner.

Everyone’s opinion on MY hub choice is touching. Bless all your hearts.

    Hopes (the new Pro 4s).

Squirrels, bunnies, deer and pedestrians will flee as I approach. No more shouts of “onyerleft!”: I’ll just coast.

I bought myself a pair of custom wheels with obnoxiously loud hubs. Does that count?
