I did Croatan on WTB Riddlers (45 up front, 37 in the rear) set up tubeless. They were fine. Except they ABSOLUTELY SUCK on the road. First time I’ve had an “ick!” moment with a tire. I kinda hate them now but they’re set up tubeless and it’s so messy to switch.

So I’ll likely go back to my standbys – Rock and Roads. They are knobby but do really well on pavement despite that.

Cons: The chain gets fairly noisy pretty quickly; within about 100 miles.

Squirt always seems to be on hand at NICA races (kinda like how Stans is at mtb/gravel races) so I’ve been using it on my never-been-outside-cheap-and-basically-a-POS-from-Performance-sell-off trainer bike and I’ve noticed that the chain noise disappears each time I reapply and comes back fairly quickly.

Military Rd should definitely have PBLs even with the few driveways, and Lorcom Ln should put PBLs in strategically as well.

Lorcom’s speed limit is a joke, especially heading east (down the hill) after Military. It’s very similar to Gallows where the speed limit is completely ignored and cars frequently encroach into the bike lanes.

Ha! They mention the Bruce Gordon Rock N Roads, which are the tires I took off to replace with the Riddlers (for Croatan). I do love my RnR’s!

I think I need to hear the story about how you won a single tire.

    ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Totally can’t remember! Possibly GRUSK two or three years ago?

I won a (single) WTB Riddler 37c a while back and decided to get a second Riddler in 45c for Croatan. Set them up tubeless yesterday (45 front, 37 rear) and they are pluuuuuuuuuush. They’re at whatever pressure was needed to get the beads to pop (so relatively high) and even then I felt like I cruising through the potholes in Georgetown and along Penna Ave.

Probably not what you’re looking for, but Phoenix Bikes on Columbia Pike is outstanding. Edoardo and Paul have saved my xxx numerous times.

Bikenetic4Life but I do also really like the idea of showing the Phoenix folks a little love.

I see “yield to pedestrians” signs on the street view in both directions on Mt Vernon Ave.

I’ve been taking a detour on the north side of I-66 using the Custis Spurt. Cross the Custis Spurt bike/ped bridge, right on the trail until it ends at McKinley cul-de-sac, right on 14th, right on 11th, right on Kensington, left on Fairfax, scoot over to Custis. Stop sign at the bottom of the hill for Kennebec is the principal annoyance.
Very little traffic during either rush hour. Adds a couple of climbs and about 0.1 miles compared to the un-detoured trails. No CX skilz required.

Rode this last night and really enjoyed it. There’s a nice hill and for me the section of the W&OD between the normal custis entrance and Brandywine Castle is a real slog so I may make this alternate way my normal route.

Haven’t ridden into work in a while. Was thinking how much fun I was having riding through Georgetown and along Pennsylvania and how the cars and I worked together to get around trucks parked in the far right lane (the de facto am bike lane).

…And then I hit G street past the White House, where everyone was actively trying to kill me.

It was closed-closed this am. The hill on Manchester looks WAY worse than it is. Once I got to the top I knew to turn left but then I wasn’t sure where to go (no signs). It also wasn’t immediately clear that I needed to turn onto the sidewalk there at Patrick Henry rather than cross the street (the other somewhat-lost cyclist with me crossed) – I had to stop and look around to figure out what I should do. Once I popped back out to the W&OD a helpful (?) pedestrian yelled at me to cut through the picnic area/park rather than heading back west to get to the custis entrance. Ground was softer than I liked, sorry about the tracks I left.

In conjunction with rumipumi (aka Mrs. Maryland Meadworks), I’m organizing a bakeries, brews, and booze ride on Saturday, February 23. All are welcome to join.

    The plan:
    — Meet at 10:00 a.m. at Velo Cafe in DC, purveyor of local coffee, Acme Pie, and other excellent baked goods.
    — Roll out at 10:30 a.m. and take the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail to Shortcake Bakery and Maryland Meadworks.
    — Do a loop up through U.Md., along Lake Artemesia, and back down to Hyattsville.
    — Visit Sangfroid Distillery (just opened December 2018; $10/person for tour and tasting) and Streetcar 82 Brewery (first deaf-owned brewery on the east coast). Neither place serves food, but Vigilante Coffee and Franklin’s are nearby if people need nibbles.
    — Since there’s nothing like pie to soak up that alcohol, roll back along the ART to Dangerously Delicious Pies on H Street.
    — Return to Velo Cafe.

The route is about 37 miles, mostly trails but also some roads, at https://ridewithgps.com/routes/29290890. Social pace (12-15 mph), no drop. Nondrinkers are welcome too.

Directions to the start: the Velo Cafe at District Hardware is located at 730b Maine Ave SW, in the Wharf. The nearest metro is Waterfront. If you can’t find street parking near the Wharf, it’s pretty easy to park at Hains Point and bike over.

If you’d like to join us along the way, let me know and I’ll see if I can get my Garmin LiveTrack working.

Depending on your stomach/liver capacity, you might be able to score points for four separate pointless prizes: coffee, pastries, beerneuring, and spiriteuring.

If you think you’d like to imbibe, please PM me or respond on this thread so that I can let the good people at Maryland Meadworks, Streetcar 82, and Sangfroid know how many people to expect.

Bring money and a lock. And a metro card if there’s a chance you might want to metro home.

The rain date is the following Saturday, March 2.

I may actually be able to make this! I’m a cheap date so I won’t be drinking anything stronger than coffee.

The official detour does not take you much out of the way–I suspect it adds less than 2 minutes–and if you take Madison instead of Manchester, there’s not even a hill.

However, I would never want to deprive you of the Military rollers.

I wasn’t going to be anywhere near that part of the W&OD on my route into work.

Washington Blvd is definitely the way to go, detour or no detour. Rolling hills so it’s not that bad to keep your speed up, and the sections without bikelanes are generally the downhills. It is a pain how you have to bounce back and forth when you lose the bike lane, but merging back into traffic has never been problematic for me.

Even in rush hour? Trying to find the best route to work tomorrow (DC) from the Tues Hills Ride. I should just suck it up and take Yorktown to Military.
