I propose that a small group of longtime participants – a cabal, if you will – gets together nightly. We review each ride and assign points based on how many points we want to assign. All of RCannon’s rides are worth -10 unless he involved a puppy. Bob James gets one point for each 500 miles. Rides to breweries get 100 bonus points.
In for the “cabal”.

I had trouble with this question:
5. How do you use the Trail? Please select one:
a. Bike
b. Walk
c. Run
d. Other wheeled deviceWhy is this not a multiple selection?!
Exactly. I use the trail for three of the four selections on a regular basis. I was really annoyed with the “select one”…

38×17? 😮
But yeah I’d agree with Casey that a 1:1 ratio should be good for paved/gravel climbs that aren’t stupid steep if you’re not carrying stuff. I used a 34×11-42 for the Dirt Farm Hill Climb and it was nice for that, but it’d be way too spinny for the flats and descents.
Considering that I accidentally raced Ed Sander on a 40×17, I can attest that the Journey is totally doable on a 38×17.

What’s people’s plans for crank and cassette sizes? My gravel bike currently has a 42 crank with a 12-36 10 speed cassette. It looks like the 65 mile route has about a 1,000 foot climb over 5 miles and then a 1,800 ish climb over 4-5 miles. It looks like an 11-42 is available for the cassette and I could go as low a 34T up front.
Run what ya brung…
That being said, I have a 50/34 up front (chain ring sizes, not crank size, my crank is 172.5
) and an 11-36 in the back. That set up has been perfect for just about everything. However, if I had a 1x, I would want a 42 up front and an 11-42 in the back. A 1:1 ratio should be plenty for all but the steepest grades. Although, I am a masher, not a spinner. If I was a spinner, I would probably go for a 38 up front and an 11-42 in the rear. Hope that helps.

With this and Croatan coming up, I’m now in the market for a carbon gravel bike…
I can not recommend the carbon Warbird highly enough. It has exceeded all of my expectations of a gravel bike. So much so, that when it became very apparent that my original Warbird was too small, I got another Warbird.

Wimps. I saw a grand total of 5 riders on the CCT this morning. On the plus side, it did allow me to belt out many a stanza of “Baby Shark”
I literally saw one other bike commuter (an e-bike, nonetheless) this morning. Tons of runners out, though.

I prefer that it says this about speed limits on sidewalks: “Speed on sidewalks should be limited to 10?15? MPH, unless within 3 Feet from any pedestrian, then the speed limit would be 6 MPH.”
What if said pedestrian is going more than 6 mph? Would these proposed speed limits also apply to pedestrians? When I run, I often run more than 6 mph. May not much more, but still…

ParticipantSpokes was affected. From what I have heard, lots of smoke and water damage, but most of the fire was contained in the ceiling.

ParticipantLots of tree litter out on the roads and trails this morning. I almost got taken out by a very large branch on Key Blvd.
I moved a couple of big branches off the Custis Trail, but the wind is still going strong. Stay upright, everyone.

ParticipantThat sucks.
Have you contacted Capital Bikeshare to see if the bike was legally checked out and if they have that person’s info?

However, any reflector interacts with any light, and cars have been required to have headlights since forever (citation needed).
Man, this led me down a rabbit hole. Interestingly enough, Massachusetts was the first state to require automobiles to have electric headlights in 1915, other states followed by the early 20’s. It seems unclear whether prior to that automobiles were required to have any source of lighting, although many of them had oil lamps.
