You can’t *make* social happen. You can’t force it. You shouldn’t force it. It’s a team strategy, and should be left up to each individual team. If a team captain can get members of her team together for rides, there is a good chance the team mileage will be the better for it. With social interaction comes cohesion and camaraderie and then maybe a team member thinks twice about bitching out on the last 5 weeks of winter because he doesn’t want to let his fellow team members down. Forced social is the xmas party your office building throws every year in the lobby. Awkward. Good social is getting the majority of your team together for a 2 hour ride and caffeine or alcohol afterwards. The best way to make freezing saddles more appealing is to dump individual stuff outside of pointless prizes and to focus on teams and making the team competition and experience better.

Get rid of the individual leaderboard and just track teams. That seems to be most in the spirit of what FS has become (for the better, fwiw).

Did i read somewhere that retirees only get .5 points for each mile and there was a 100 point bonus for every 1k of climbing?

Maybe it was just a fever dream.

The three rules of smart cycling:

    1. Always wear black.
    2. Always ride hills.
    3. Always call the cops.

Please memorize for quiz when we ride together again. :D

Nah. I love freezing saddles and I love the friends and connections I made because of it, but I’m too competitive to enjoy it normally (aka I’m a crybaby infant that hates to lose).

I would hate to see this, because it would mean the bottom two people would have no incentive to ride at all. If Freezing Saddles gets some guy to figure out that he really can ride every day all winter, I see that as a positive, even if every ride is a sleaze ride. But that guy might well be at the bottom of his team, and therefore lose motivation under this system.

Ok, sure but the motivational hit that comes with having one or two teammates that disappear or never show in the first place is pretty bad, too.

If you are last on your team and your points don’t count, what’s the solution? Basically the solution to many of life’s problems…ride more.

Instead of having to track minimum participation, would it be easier if scores where just comprised of the points from the top X number of riders on each team? As an example, each team has 10 riders, you only take the top 8 scores, so teams that lost a rider or had someone flake out wouldn’t be penalized.

I somewhat disagree with this. As a former runner, I could run a steady 9 mph, somewhat faster downhill and when doing intervals. A runner is a pedestrian I believe. There is no such thing as “against the flow of traffic” when a pedestrian. An attentive driver should “expect” that. The OP was moving at a similar speed and had the walk signal.
If the driver had hit me, running at 9-10 mph, would you assign fault evenly, too? What if I were jogging with a jogging stroller and a baby?

Haha Steve O will humblebrag in ANY THREAD HE PLEASES.

OP: Definitely look up Bruce Deming and best of luck.

I would discourage the idea of a Rosslyn Friday Coffee Club, since there is already one just up the street in Courthouse. A different day would be better. There are currently 4 Friday Coffee Clubs. Any new ones should probably be strategically located not too close to existing ones. That said, I believe Kitty has her own, private Rosslyn Coffee Club at whim.

I love that Steve O is COFFEE CLUB SHERIFF. Please adjust his forum title accordingly.

I had fun racing an e-bike dude down the Rosslyn hill today until he jumped up on the sidewalk along Lynn before the IOD.

    Cheater.

In case someone gets tired walking eastbound across Key Bridge, there’s a dockless bike waiting for you about halfway across.

    Speaking of lies:

“State transportation officials say the expansion will help reduce congestion in the I-66 corridor, which experiences eight to 10 hours of gridlock daily, including weekends, and carries roughly 200,000 vehicles on an average day.”

    They’ll never, ever learn.
