You’re lucky I have a good light or you would have suffered an atomic wedgie.
At the very least, I think his workout would have been tainted.
I’ll show myself out.

ParticipantI guess you can wear some of your weird uncle’s old sweaters if you want to look like a cycling hobo or whatever, but it might be worth it to splurge and buy a wool long sleeve cycling jersey. That, paired with a long sleeve base layer will keep you squared away down into the high 30s and you can even layer a matching (black) lightweight windbreaker if the wind is ridiculous.

Participant2016 was the 5th best year of my adult life. Easily.
– 10,400 miles on the bike (715 hours)
– 520,000 feet climbing (previous best 245k)
– 426,000 calories burned
– 1,000,000+ calories eaten (this is more important)
– did Kill Bill on a steel singlespeed
– first Super 600k!
– first 24 hour fleche (#teamshady)
– qualified for the boston marathon with as little training (248 miles/4 months) as possible
– first bike race (Dirty BikenetiCrit)
– first trail race podium (Hemlock Half)
– 11 centuries
– getting the KOM on the backside of Mt. Weather
– ride my bike to a river, get in river, drink beer(s), repeat
– coffee club cannonball run, co-founder (don’t click, it’s dumb)
– lived to see multiple riders spell out “Shue Sucks” using Strava art (this should be #1)
– Literally HUNDREDS (with a capital S) of coffee clubs with my kids and friends
– Ride in DC all night and into the morning2017
Basically do all of that stuff again, emphasis on family and friends and beer. Maybe learn to mountain bike. Ride a tandem with B Shue.
Here’s to 2016 and all that’s to come in 2017!

He rides pink so that he can wear black. Same reason I often ride yellow or orange, or so I pretend.
Orange is an extremely acceptable bike color. It is not an acceptable clothing color.

Unless, of course, you ride around on a pink fixie….
Black and pink is a solid color combo!

ParticipantBlack is the only color. Get better lights.

ParticipantThese are pretty great. I think they would be WAAAAY more interesting on uphills/downhills/blind corners, but I’m no traffic engineer.

In just 15 simple steps, you too can avoid Glebe Road.
As long as you print it out and just tape it to your handlebars you should be fine.

ParticipantHey I came up with a fun detour for folks heading west in the afternoon that doesn’t put you on Glebe Road. The advantage of 20th street is that there is little traffic, and the few stop signs are 4-way (as opposed to 23rd street where many cross streets don’t stop).
When you come off of MVT and through the CC Connector, take a left onto crystal drive and then an immediate right and straight up 18th.
You’ll go through 2 lights and then left on Fern. Take a right on 20th, toodle along, crank up the hill. Set a PR.
When you get to the top of 20th, cross Arlington Ridge/take a left in one of the crosswalks (unless there is no traffic, then just take a left on Arlington Ridge). Once on Arlington Ridge, ride with traffic until you hit the light, then take the lane all the way down the hill until the split – where you stay right (onto S. Lang St.) (Note: Arlington Ridge Rd is in fantastic shape. You can probably close your eyes during this portion.)
Continue downhill on S. Lang St. as you pass Gunston MS on your right, then turn right on 28th St. That will take you behind the Giant shopping center. Take a left at your first stop sign onto S. Meade St.
Cross Glebe at the light and immediately turn right onto 4MR trail. Profit.

ParticipantIf folks are looking for a high quality commuting camera, the GoPro + LCD is on sale at Amazon for at least today (149.99).

ParticipantThe concrete part is the best way because you can catch air coming up from either end. The bridge is for old people who live their lives in fear.
