I know this thread is a bit old, but I wanted to chime in and also ask an additional question with a similar route
For Ballston into DC, I too recommend either Custis trail or Wilson/Rhodes/15th/Fairfax(?) to Iwo Jima. That bridge over 50 can be sketchy sometimes due to the sidewalk being narrow and the cars whizzing past. You can fly through Iwo Jima AM, then it loops you down by the Cemetery. I personally come across Memorial Bridge and then down Independence on the sidewalks (park land so it’s allowed).
These sidewalks are treacherous in the afternoon due to tourists though. Is there a better way from SW DC (Smithsonian area) back into Rosslyn?
There are a number of ways, depending on exactly where you are coming from. The maximum tourist avoidance is to take the Francis Case Bridge over into Hains Point. The path begins at the end of L’Enfant Plaza: http://goo.gl/maps/IsPJX
From there, you can get to Ohio Drive and either take that all the way up to Memorial Bridge or just hop on 14 St. Bridge, which would probably be easier. Other options are to go south from the Smithsonian and hop on I St heading west all the way down to Water Street. From there you can ride the sidewalk up to the Tidal Basin area. The only problem with this route is you are still dealing with a lot of tourists.
Those are my thoughts.

From DC, my plan is cross the Key Bridge, get on Custis, left on Veitch, and right on Wilson Blvd. In my memory I associate Veitch with a hill, but can’t remember if that’s coming or going.
The hill is up for those going from Custis to Wilson, though luckily it is a very short hill.

This is a bump up from cold and rainy Chicago. I’m looking forward to celebrating Spring (or summer?) with everyone! Despite pouring rain here, I saw a lot of cyclists downtown yesterday, as well as one awesome track stand.
Please try to let me know before Weds. if you plan to come to the happy hour so I can reserve enough outdoor table space and get good service for us. All are welcome!
I’ll be there.
I’ll also be in Chicago tonight, so maybe I’ll see you out on the streets!

ParticipantBallston to Anacostia. Willing to meet up in Ballston and Rosslyn. Trying to get co-workers too, but not much luck yet.

Going with the traffic is bad too. From about the fish market to the 14th street bridge…. I hate this time of year.
This. I couldn’t take the peds on the sidewalk there anymore, so I’ve started crossing at 9th and taking the Case Bridge over the water to Hains, thru the NPS(?) parking lot, and coming up to 14th St. from the other side. It’s not ideal, but it is helping me keep my sanity.

Maybe just one. However, in the previous thread, the poster said it happened after getting off the south side of the bridge, which is not 23rd & Constitution…

Woops. I flipped Independence and Constitution in my head. I guess then I’m as confused as anyone.

So were there two incidents or only one?
Looks like just one. The witness on the other thread on this said that the rider’s wheel had fallen off, and unsure if that was the cause or result of the accident. It sounds like from the updated news report that it was probably the cause.
Hope the rider is ok.

why someone would jog shirtless in the dark when it’s not quite 60 out?
Depends on how pale they are after the winter. HiViz?

I left work on N. Lynn in Rosslyn last night. 4 or 5 Arlington PD cruisers were parked in the bike lane on Lynn just before 19th. When I got to 19th, I saw a LEO picking up a road bike and putting it in the trunk of his cruiser. I overheard hims say, “I’m surprised this doesn’t happen more often.” Didn’t see the cyclist anywhere. I am assuming it was an accident. Anybody hear anything?
ARLNow tweeted this last night:
UPDATE: Bicyclist was not struck by a vehicle but did fall off bike. Female victim, unconscious and being transported to trauma center.
No other info on their site. Maybe someone fell avoiding a car or bikes/peds in the tight crossing? Or even some other medical issue while riding?

The stretch between Wright Gate and 110 is now finished and ready for Bike DC 2012. I mean 2013. I mean 2014.
Thanks for the update! I’ve been cutting thru the Iwo Jima park to avoid this. The last week or two I’ve been able to tell that most of the repaving was done, but it’s still dark (I only go this way in the a.m.) and I haven’t felt like being wrong and having to ride over the terrible part of Marshall. Great news.

which has resulted in the arrival of spring tourons parking their cars in the path of cyclists.
Every day for the past two weeks, I tell myself that I will head up the hill and over the Case Bridge, and come around to get on 14th St Bridge. But then, along Water St, I keep going straight for some reason, make my left onto the Ohio Sidewalk, and immediately regret it. I don’t understand myself….

ParticipantA few pics from yesterday’s ride home. It was sunny on the So. Cap St. Bridge (where I was) and in Arlington (behind the clouds), but rainy in southwest DC. You can see the lines of rain coming down from the clouds.
