ParticipantCar shaped bike racks turning one car parking spot into ten bike spots: http://www.cyclehoop.com/product/bike-racks-and-cycle-stands/car-bike-port/
I wasn’t sure where else to put this, I thought covet thread made sense. Also some really cool storage items on their website.

ParticipantSome wide streaks of slick ice on the Rt. 110 trail this morning, just after the right hand turn heading up toward the cemetery. I slid out, though luckily into a snow pile that put my bike back upright. Be careful out there.

Steve, were you on the WOD this morning? I spotted someone wearing full red ski gloves… in fact they looked like Dragster racing gloves from a distance…. I was a little jealous!
Nope, not me! I roll down Fairfax-Wilson-Iwo Jima-DC.
Steve
ParticipantYea, tailwinds are awesome, and so much warmer. I also have said this before, but I have found that one thing I love about bar-end shifters is the ability to wear real winter ski gloves, because dexterity isn’t so important. They keep my hands nice and warm, so much better than my winter cycling gloves.
Oh, and in the theme of the thread……the best part was how it woke me up.

Well that f-ing sucked. On the coldest day I’ve ridden in on this year I got my first AM flat about halfway. I was right near Nats Park.
Not sure if you saw my post a few days ago, but basically the exact same story, just on Water St. instead of M. I think the thing about Metro’s policy that most upsets me is the inability to metro the bike home. Instead, you have to drive the next day just to recover the bike.
Either way, I hope the day goes better.

Since I arrive there first at 7:00 I guess I was a trend setter. I needed to leave when Steve O arrived because of the rule against having two Steve’s in the same place for security reasons.
Precisely why I cannot go.

Yeah…that’s why I just said f&*% it” and bought legit winter riding shoes. With a thick pair of socks, they’re warm (enough) into the single digits, they’re completely waterproof, and I expect that they’ll last years, even with using them every day (they are Sidis, after all). Also, they look cool, while shoe covers absolutely do not.
Oh. My. God. I think my paycheck just got a few hundred dollars lighter. Plus if you take the cleat off and wear some ultra-tapered jeans, you can go to any Euro club you want…

ParticipantJust my $.02, if you want to speak to a professional about it, might I recommend The Old Bike Shop in Clarendon. They, as a matter of business, restore old bikes to rideability. From what I have seen there, they do not overbuild the bike back up, moreso just try to put good working used parts back on it and make sure it is good to use. They might have good advice and thoughts for you, as they have a good eye for fixing these things up. I’d think they would help more than a more traditional shop in the area.

ParticipantGot a flat on Water street (SW Waterfront). Despite the wet and cold, got a fairly quick change, pumped it up, flat again. Booo. I think with all the sand, salt, etc. on my rims and tires, it was inevitable that something else got in the tire when changing it. It’s tough before the sun comes up and with that much junk to be clean about it.
Anyways, I walked a little over a mile from there to South Capital Street Bridge, which bummed me out, but then a friendly guy named Lance rolled down his window and offered to throw my bike on his bike rack and give me a lift. He wasn’t even going to base, where I was going, but still gave me a ride about a mile and a half to my building. It makes you happy that there are such nice pople around.

ParticipantIn front of Liberty Tavern today someone said hi from a car and commented on me getting in my freezing saddles points! I couldn’t put a name to the face tho, but pretty sure we met setting up for BTWD last year at Freshbikes. Anyways, I’m not actually in FS this year, but your shout-out absolutely made my day. Thanks!

I posted this in another thread but here’s me attempting to ride over that bridge last night: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsJWhzNS1Go
I think you had the right idea by walking
Be honest, you wrecked on purpose just to post a video close-up of that new bike.
Steve
ParticipantSouth Cap St is now totally clear on the bridge and from bridge to Base.
Also the 110 trail is now totally clear.

Probably $15-20 to park in a garage.
Oh yea, I guess I should have noted that parking for me is free. So is metro by way of subsidy. I also leave home a little before 6 on most days, so when I drive I hit zero morning traffic and light afternoon traffic. Rush hour would move my driving and riding times closer together. 9-9.5 miles each way, depending on route (and up to 15 on the early days of spring when I’m super happy!).

ParticipantCompletely overdressed. Hopefully the temps will drop enough to make my choice make sense later!
That’s pretty cool that your bike rides are quicker than driving. I wonder how different most people’s are. My roundtrip commutes are:
1. Bike – 90 min
2. Metro + Shuttle – 150 min
3. Drive – 50 minI don’t have a car, so the biking choice is pretty easy. When my wife gets snow days (she’s a teacher), it can be harder to not just take the car, because it’s quite a bit faster and rare enough that my body doesn’t mind the break.

I too wonder since I need to ride over one of those or South Capital, Penn or MLK Tuesday. I plan to drive over South Cap tonight and will see what it looks like and report.

South Cap St. Bridge is salted and mostly clear (down-stream side). A bit of slush/snow/ice on the two ramps, but nothing crazy. The path along S Cap St. inbetween the bridge and the north gate to Base is still pretty bad. Lots of snow and ice, fairly deep ruts, and not much pavement. If no one is coming the other way, usually a decent line can be taken, two wide puts you in some worse stuff. Nothing terrible, just not very clear. It’ll keep me on studded tires for another few days I have a feeling, but I’m also pretty risk averse.
