Hi. I have joined the party late…but do have a question about governors and max speeds on all these dockless scooters. My understanding is that the dockless ones are capped at a certain speed? I ask because I came across a young man on an e-scooter going SE on Maine Ave. a few nights ago. I am enroute to Ft. McNair to pick up Sue, running with traffic which is doing 30 (in a 25) and I am passed on driver’s right by this scooter at speed. He pulls away, probably doing 35 or more, with a big lean as Maine bears left and becomes M St. What little I could see of his ride in the dark- definitely not a rental- had to be his own. A little larger, with a larger and beefier wheelset. No protective gear… and a truly burly Guardian Angel watchin’ over him?

An update- My workday took me past 12th & Florida NE. I can presume the wreck that destroyed the Salovesh ghost bike also destroyed the traffic light pole it was locked to. DDOT was repairing it today:

How often do you do these? I’m volunteering at a bike rodeo Saturday morning but I’m a big fan of riding casually and drinking coffee.

Judd, we’re trying to do a Papillon Ride of some sort most Saturday mornings. I try to do a Casual Coffee Ride every other Saturday, and throw other destinations in as well (like Old Town). Of special note later in the year are *two* Monuments At Night Rides. (Stolen with gratitude from Revolution Cycles- their rides are what encouraged a onetime Bicycle Exchange employee to return to the bike business).

However, the next couple of weeks are a dilemma for me- Saturday, I am committed to the Armed Forces Challenge Ride. They switched things up and are running this on a Saturday (So much for a Ride To The Races.) And on the 15th, there is the WABA Sweet Ride, in the same morning slot, which I can’t really compete with…

    But stay tuned.

My career simply does not allow me any riding time during the week. So coffee club is nearly impossible for me. Sorry, all. It is what it is until I retire.

Dasgeh, I won’t be able to be there. I have my Papillon Casual Coffee Ride rolling out at 10:30.

The good? If you want a route *totally* car free and protected, and ride roads and freeways you could otherwise *never* ride safely, then this is for you.

The bad? The expressways are nowhere near as smooth as your motor vehicle makes you think. The Whitehurst Freeway in particular can be treacherous with potholes and pavement seams.

The good? Amongst MANY MANY MANY fellow cyclists.

The bad? Amongst too many fellow cyclists. Pro tip- you *can* control the space directly around you. Do that, have a full level of alertness around you, call your passes and pass with discretion, and you’ll be fine.

The good? Entertainment along the route cheering you on. My favorite was Batala, the Afro-Bahia (Brazilian) drum group, a few years ago. Also, well supported. As noted elsewhere, you will not lack for bananas.

The weather? It is what it will be. And if you have rain gear and fenders, riding in the rain can actually be reasonably pleasant.

I have done this ride 3 times, once with my wife. I will be Sue’s ride support again this year (riding as Papillon Cycles/Starduster Racing). She feels safer doing this ride than she does riding on my Papillon shop rides. No cars. That’s why.

Actually, I now know the backstory on why Phuoc (Bike Club) builds wheels like this. Ask me at coffee club sometime.

Back in the day, I worked with Phuoc at The Bicycle Exchange. So I *will* ask you about the story…

Steve O: Sorry, I must scrub tonight. Energy’s just not there. Have a good one!

Pete has a Bikenetic Ride in the morning that also visits 12th & Florida NE. Will do that one instead. Mr. Salovesh will still be honored.

Bobco, there will be another opportunity to meet up somewhere. We need to take you to a certain pie shop on the Pike!

Also a note about Maine Ave.- Phase II of The Wharf is now under construction. Between 7th & 6th, the sidewalk and Water St. route we once used is gone. The sole option is to take the lane until 6th, at St. Augustine’s, where there is access to the dinner cruise boats, and I trust, the bike trail. Or take 4th…

Bobco, just for the “ooo-ah” factor, bring your Cascades Ride Leader jersey.

I just thought of something- we just might come across the hordes leaving The Anthem. Such is the timing…

Still probable, can’t commit totally just yet.

*Where* are we rendezvousing on the Washington Monument grounds?

It IS open and repaired. Be aware that if you are eastbound, there is not much room between the pavement and a steep drop-off into the eroded 4MR.
