ParticipantIt is now 2019. And it’s time. Papillon’s Monuments at Night Ride returns Saturday evening, August 24. Details to follow, soon.

I hear the e-assist CaBis are returning this fall.
I rode a CVP version yesterday. It must take some getting used to – I constantly felt like I was in the wrong gear. Although my right calf is still mostly jello compared to pre-surgery, so part of it is probably me.
Maybe that is because the NuVinci’s shifter progresses in the *opposite* direction as a Shimano derailleur or hub setup. A different sort of muscle memory that constantly found me shifting in the wrong direction…

If the Wilson underpass isn’t going to be fixed anytime soon, could they at least stripe a temporary crossing at the preferred location for crossing Wilson. The detour requires riding a narrow sidewalk on both sides and waiting on a beg button for a light. The preferred path has curb cuts on both sides and the traffic volumes are reasonable, even at rush hour, for making a safe crossing. Considering their are other unsignalized crosswalks on Wilson, this shouldn’t be a big ask.
I tried the narrow sidewalk detour today. Grumble grumble grumble. Additional complication was a rectangular access cover on the north side sidewalk, at the crossing. It is *raised* all the way around, close to an inch. That’s enough to cause an inattentive rider a fall.
Hurry up with that concrete slab repair underneath.

I wonder if there is an affordable technological solution to the root-heave problem on trails, other than eradicating all trailside trees? Maybe it’s something the League of American Cyclists or Rails-to-Trails Conservancy could study?
I think, because these trails do not have to bear the weight of your average road (sustained pressure from countless cars and high tonnage trucks), they are built lighter. Much thinner gravel base/ballast (if at all), and a thinner top layer of asphalt. So it is easier for a tree root to press upward and crack it from underneath. If there is anyone here from Arlington County who knows roadbuilding, please chime in! Because some of these root heaves are on fast downhills. Unless you are running a dual suspension bike, that’s a big problem.

ParticipantBTW, John Michael from Papillon Cycles is looking for honest-to-goodness wooden rims. Contact him at the shop.

Well, it’s pretty easy to hide a motor in a fully-faired recumbent.
BTW, why is there a freewheel hanging in an 1890’s bicycle shop? The first derailleurs didn’t come around until the 1930s.
OMG, you’re right! We all missed that.
The story of those pictures: While out to launch, we went to see Neil Armstrong’s restored space suit. Found a Wright Bros. bicycle instead.

Consularrider, honored to meet you and thanks for riding with us.
Another time, I’ll ask (many) questions about Frankfurt (I am trying to connect with my memories of that place 60 years ago).

ParticipantMy [dislikes] here are for this horrible news, and the equally horrible online comments. But we need an accident report or witness reports (ideally from her fellow riders) before we can safely speculate.

ParticipantThat last photo at the Wright exhibit- all us cyclists (including John-Michael from Papillon) looked at the bike, looked at the workbench, looked at the Wrights’ service claim ticket, and discussed how little has changed.

Shepard, as in Gordon Shepard, the astronaut [emoji1956]? Is that why we had to meet at the Air & Space Museum?

We’ve heard good things about last night’s show, which is being repeated tonight — except for driving home afterward. Did any of y’all (especially fellow bridge-dependent Virginians) bike to & from any of last night’s shows? Any advice?
Thanks!
Sue et moi parked at Pentagon City and Metro’d it over and back without incident or unusual delay. Another cycling friend reported that they could lay their bikes down next to them without being hassled. Tonight, I am leading my own shop ride down there, and will rendezvous with Midnight Saddles.
Yes. GO!

ParticipantI have been assured that Air & Space will be open tomorrow night- a friend volunteers there, and has the 10pm-midnight shift where Armstrong’s restored space suit is displayed.
Gina, thank you. This gives me confidence that I can pull off my *Papillon Goes to the Moon (sorta)* Ride Saturday. (Including inflight rendezvous with Midnight Saddles)
