The bike shop on The Pike’s night ride is back! Time to take in the Capital City when it glows at night! On two wheels. Saturday August 5. We roll out of Papillon Cycles at 7:00 PM and pass an additional pickup point for those who want a shorter journey at Lady Bird Johnson Park just off of the Mount Vernon Trail at 7:30 PM. There are dedicated parking spots just on the edge of Pentagon North Parking, and on the marina side, accessible from GW Parkway. From there, across the 14th St. Bridge, on a loop that covers Jefferson Memorial, FDR Memorial (walk-through, 4th Term to 1st), MLK Memorial, the DC WW I Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam War Memorial, WW II Memorial, and the Washington Monument, then back across the river.
Estimated mileage 13.5, about 7.5 for those riding from Lady Bird Johnson Park, 2 hours or so at an easy pace. Here is a rough map of our route: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/2805+Columbia+Pike,+Arlington,+VA+22204/38.8897984,-77.0352444/@38.8782696,-77.0713171,14.5z/data=!4m59!4m58!1m55!1m1!1s0x89b7b6ba4607b191:0x15476ea5e8188583!2m2!1d-77.0869544!2d38.8625782!3m4!1m2!1d-77.0606405!2d38.8693631!3s0x89b7b6e0eafd0f8d:0x431e535737e4d77f!3m4!1m2!1d-77.059575!2d38.8694472!3s0x89b7b6e0f43e72dd:0xafb03431c4afdf70!3m4!1m2!1d-77.0595873!2d38.8695571!3s0x89b7b6e0fea22d25:0xd325cd676749e6ac!3m4!1m2!1d-77.0398333!2d38.87993!3s0x89b7b70ea312152b:0x3ece6a15e207a273!3m4!1m2!1d-77.0408837!2d38.8811934!3s0x89b7b70931030229:0xddd60f00137820f!3m4!1m2!1d-77.043406!2d38.8876449!3s0x89b7b7a794960bdd:0x1f6fe1ead172206b!3m4!1m2!1d-77.0458358!2d38.8880806!3s0x89b7b7a86aa65695:0xf903b7dac08e09d1!3m4!1m2!1d-77.0470523!2d38.8902831!3s0x89b7b7a8ef1a6125:0x480ae395197b5bba!3m4!1m2!1d-77.0445108!2d38.8904939!3s0x89b7b7a618727733:0xc09badd75928f8fb!3m4!1m2!1d-77.0421948!2d38.8904274!3s0x89b7b7a68bca85c7:0x4151e0fd93442670!1m0!3e1?hl=en
And if there is consent, we can roll to the Capitol and back, along the Mall.
Front and rear lights, and helmets, of course.
For those interested, we will stop for libations on the Pike afterwards, location TBD.
Of course there is a soundtrack for this event: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhrTaOIl5iI

Can we also visit the U.S. Institute of Peace (1 block north of the Lincoln Memorial) and the Americans Disabled for Life Memorial (opened in 2014; 1 block south of the U.S. Botanic Garden https://goo.gl/maps/1TdQZSEcSMN2)? I ask because they also look beautiful at night.

Here’s a shorter URL (in Google Maps, you can hit Menu -> Share or embed map -> Click the Short URL box) for your route: https://goo.gl/maps/sK2eroR4doG2 I can create one in Strava and/or MapMyRide if you’d like.
July 31, 2017 at 7:55 pm #1073903KittyParticipantI can see a perfect opportunity for folks to get their bikes washed for charity, have some dinner, then hit this up. I’m just sayin’
August 2, 2017 at 4:47 pm #1074053TaniaParticipantWe’re a strong maybe. It will be a good test of the SO’s broken, plated and then partially de-screwed wrist and the tandem. He rode his bike to work today for the first time since it happened late May (screw removal two weeks ago).
I’m doing the Cumberland century earlier on Sat so hopefully I can stay awake.
August 5, 2017 at 7:45 pm #1074198StardusterParticipantI did a pre-ride of the route this morning, which included a special request for this ride, as well as the optional loop to the Capital (if everyone collectively wants to).
Of note, the trail alongside Washington Blvd, over Jefferson Davis Highway- many of you remember that bridge as scary narrow, with dangerous shoulders and no protection from cars at speed. That section is currently being rebuilt, and the detour is much much much much much better. One less worry.
And if anyone is coming from the Keenan Garvey Memorial Ride (or Kitty’s Bike Wash party) and wants to put down a few more *easy* miles, come join us!
We’ll keep the shop lights on for you…

August 15, 2019 at 3:09 am #1100119StardusterParticipantIt is now 2019. And it’s time. Papillon’s Monuments at Night Ride returns Saturday evening, August 24. Details to follow, soon.

A reminder- if you wish to cruise around and see lots of illuminated marble in DC tomorrow evening, there’s a ride with your name on it: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-papillon-monuments-at-night-ride-tickets-69381561117

One more time- the soundtrack for my final ride for Papillon Bicycles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhrTaOIl5iI&fbclid=IwAR1_xHUTZGK15YyNE2WPZ0SJFVSFdY4tCufGg6oFASQ5AeOkCQwzlpXyEE4
*Redux* means again. So, *again*, the 2nd Papillon Monuments at Night Ride of the year. The Capital City is uniquely beautiful at night, and what better way to tour all that illuminated marble than by bike? Our route does use a section of Columbia Pike (We now have a way to sidestep most of the Pike, safely) down to the Pentagon, then to Lady Bird Johnson Park, Pentagon-side parking lot, where we continue an enroute meetup location for those coming from elsewhere, then across the river. Jefferson Memorial, FDR (4th Term to 1st), MLK, the District’s WW I Memorial, Lincoln, Vietnam, WW II, and more (we have been known to take the ride to the Capitol), then back.
This is the traditional route with its Washington Boulevard Trail update- https://www.google.com/maps/dir/2805+Columbia+Pike,+Arlington,+VA+22204/National+World+War+II+Memorial,+Independence+Avenue+Southwest,+Washington,+DC/@38.8676277,-77.0806552,16z/data=!4m49!4m48!1m40!1m1!1s0x89b7b6ba4607b191:0x15476ea5e8188583!2m2!1d-77.0869544!2d38.8625782!3m4!1m2!1d-77.0398333!2d38.87993!3s0x89b7b70ea312152b:0x3ece6a15e207a273!3m4!1m2!1d-77.0408837!2d38.8811934!3s0x89b7b70931030229:0xddd60f00137820f!3m4!1m2!1d-77.043406!2d38.8876449!3s0x89b7b7a794960bdd:0x1f6fe1ead172206b!3m4!1m2!1d-77.0458358!2d38.8880806!3s0x89b7b7a86aa65695:0xf903b7dac08e09d1!3m4!1m2!1d-77.0470523!2d38.8902831!3s0x89b7b7a8ef1a6125:0x480ae395197b5bba!3m4!1m2!1d-77.0445108!2d38.8904939!3s0x89b7b7a618727733:0xc09badd75928f8fb!3m4!1m2!1d-77.0421948!2d38.8904274!3s0x89b7b7a68bca85c7:0x4151e0fd93442670!1m5!1m1!1s0x89b7b7a6dc5b07e1:0x84c9b114aee12b36!2m2!1d-77.040556!2d38.889443!3e1?hl=en Which we can extend eastward if everyone is so inspired (and we have in the past)! Approximately 14 miles or so round trip. Food and libations await (perhaps at Lost Dog Cafe across the street) when we return.
THIS IS A NIGHT RIDE. We recommend front and rear lighting to carry you for 2 1/2 hours in total darkness. And helmets, of course. An easy pace- we are not racing, and we will even gleefully welcome cargo bikes. Why not?. We leave no one behind.
Because this is the autumnal equinox, we will meet at Papillon Cycles at 7:00pm. We plan to roll out at 7:15-ish, about the time of sunset.
Be here. Aloha.
September 21, 2019 at 12:51 pm #1100594StardusterParticipantGood morning. Papillon’s Monuments at Night Redux is this evening. The weather forecast- Clear. Sunset at 7:07pm, temperatures around 81 going down to 74 by 11. Can’t ask for better (except maybe the Moon, but that won’t rise until 11:47).
Now is the time to make sure your lights are charged, batteries fresh, for 3 hours of night work. If you need anything last second, Bailey can help you at the shop.
One last time… we gonna have fun.
Be here. Aloha.
September 21, 2019 at 3:58 pm #1100595Boomer CyclesParticipantWhen do you expect to cruise through Lady Bird Johnson Park?
I was able to time the rendezvous there with you for the Apollo 50 ride, and might try again for tonight’s DC Monuments ride, FYISent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
