Looks like they need someone to “clean up” the signage as well.
Lol! Took me awhile to figure out.

2/19/23: Sustainable Future
All this construction is the future Trolley Trail connection through Hyattsville, which will make it easier for bike commuters in the future!

Is it going to be all on road or in the off-road brush pictured? I was just looking at the rail ROWs and both from NE branch and the RR parallel to RI Ave would require expensive bridges.

Participant2/19/23 Sustainable Sunday, Brentwood Reservoir Ward 5 Community Solar
I stopped by two solar farms tonight. The first powers my neighborhood in Ward 5 and is built on top of an underground DC Water reservoir.
The second was at the end of the Oxon Run Bike Trail.
Edit: The Brentwood farm will be capturing 2.5 million kilowatt hours of electricity per year. It is one of the largest arrays in DC and will provide energy bill credits to more than 500 income-qualified families through the District’s Solar for All program when complete.

Participant2/18/23 Service Saturday, Bike Lane Uprising
After taking a photo of the Capital Area Foodbank in the NE near Ft. Totten metro with my bike leaning on the volunteer sign, I stumbled across a DC Metro bus #6421, DC plate B 44475, parked partially in the bike lane with obvious bike icon and green paint not visible in this photo (but I have others on Strava), and submitted it after some issues with the app (wouldn’t accept my password even after changing it), to their website (https://www.bikelaneuprising.com/database-feed). That’s a voluntary service I regularly provide to the city and cyclists. I often also report these as obstructions to bike lanes in 311.

Participant2/17/23 Calvin Ball
Well, I forgot how much fun Calvin Ball can be IF you eventually find it (I think I walked about 1/3 of a mile, hunting for what I eventually realized was a fence perpendicular to a low wall – it was very dark and cold). But when you do it’s just so thrilling. Seriously!
Anyway, if anyone is out and about before midnight or wants to incorporate Calvin Ball another day, he took a bike ride to the Land of KLINGLE Claus a mile or so south or SSW of where I found him. Her. I don’t know what a ball’s pronouns are. Klingle was shot down over Canada as a distraction from Nord Stream and somehow drifted here . . .
The photo is where she is, look carefully, which I then laid down and covered with leaves. I will post lots more photos on Strava under Steve Szibler and, if it works, the hike which is on my Garmin 245 that I’ll mark as #nobafs. But both don’t always post. Strava is fickle like that. Should be enough info in this photo.
So fun!
PS Don’t know why it posted sideways. These attachments are always degraded a lot for me, but the Calvin Ball is in about the center of the photo and it’s b&w.

My sons and dad were real Calvin & Hobbes folk, reading all the books, laughing at their deeds and tricks. The giggles from the bedroom were mischievous so that has always been my impression of C&H. I battled the wind, some rain spritzes and hopped the fence to get under the bridge to nowhere to capture this troll by Mary LaRue Wells, 1990, having just hidden the calvinball in the muck.
The troll on the rope swing captures the visage of Walter Webdale, former head of the Fairfax County Housing Authority and former president of AHC Housing in Arlington, Virginia, who commissioned this work as a way to add amusement to a utilitarian footbridge.

I’m not sure if the CB is now hidden in Reston or near the location from earlier this week, but I’ll take a look at Pierce Mill! Probably won’t ride to the Town Center, but that’s a really cool troll!

So, are we trying to get the farthest away? If so I’m following kbikeva and picking DC around the earth from itself for 19,371 miles. But only her family would know if that varies from location to location. Like what if the line doesn’t include many mountain ranges? Can any location find some line that makes it longer – a diagonal to the equator for instance. If the earth is oblong it would be longer from the poles . . .
According to Furthest City found on google, Perth, Australia is furthest point away that’s not in the middle of the ocean. It’s 18,620 kms from DC, which is 11,569.932 miles away. If we use the 19,371 as pretty close, that means we need only more than 7,801.068 to go around the earth to get to that number. Seems like that would be easy. What do you think?

Participant2/15/23 Little Free Library – Puzzle Post
I wanted the “Frida’s Garden” puzzle – of course! But it was bigger than I wanted to caring to Hains Point without a backpack. Photo on Strava.

Puzzle Post in Washington, D.C.
A residential corner of D.C.’s Hill East neighborhood is home to this puzzle-lending library. After she passed time during the pandemic solving jigsaw puzzles, retired attorney Suzanne Nyland wanted to share the fun with her community. Neighbors can borrow, lend or swap puzzles. In case a piece goes missing, Nyland makes replacements using a 3D printer.
Starting with one library in September 2021, the “Puzzle Post” continues to grow. Suzanne added a second little library for kids’ puzzles and just added a third. Nyland says she has been surprised by the community support.
“People will stop by to talk. … It becomes a water cooler on the street,” she says.Prince Of Petworth (PoPville)
Thanks to Austin for sharing:
“A creative use of a Little Free Library, there’s a puzzle lending library in Hill East.
Passing time during the pandemic putting together puzzles, the owner decided to pass on the fun to the community. Neighbors can borrow, lend or swap puzzles. In case a piece goes missing, the owner is working on making replacements using a 3D printer. Within blocks are other creative Little Free Libraries- one filled with toys and another with free art by local artists. To join the puzzle fun, the “Puzzle Post” is along C Street SE in between 13th Street SE and Kentucky Avenue SE.”sszibler

Nice bike lean. Not quite a GCN epic, but a very nice looking stead.
Look for their video on advanced leans – lining up the valves, biggie smalls and such.

Very clever! I wondered what had happened to Calvin Ball this year. I’ve never played b/c it has always stayed way too far from my usual riding area and in past years when the weather was actually winter, I didn’t ride that far from home. But I liked watching it bounce around. I hope someone who is playing this game gets it!
Are you in Virginia Land or Mary Land? Initially, I was going to put it up in one of the parks near Lake Artemis, but I also wanted to do some Hains Point laps and continue to recover from Covid and my fall and not go too far. I still went a bit further than was probably best, but at least it was slow.

Participant2/14/2023 Errandeering
My errand was to plant the last official Calvin Ball in play, specifically Calvin Ball – Donut Ball (for some reason). I even added a tasty and healthy treat.
This was like 3 years ago, right???!
It is currently hidden at Pierce Mill as pictured in the photo. I put a piece of wood over it to hide it a little better. I’ll also post more photos on my ride that may help you find it.
My idea was that, if someone gets it tomorrow, they could hide it in a Little Free Library. After that it could move to somewhere with license plates, and finally it might be replanted on Friday for Calvin Ball. Just a thought! Be creative.

ParticipantNational Building Museum. Now if I’d only ride during the day maybe I could see some indoor architecture. All the bumps in DC hurt tonight. Drivers don’t stop at flashing red lights anymore. That’s a new 🤬 them cars thing I’ve noticed recently.
