I’ve cycled to that store a few times as I went out to visit one of my friends in Lincolnia. I would take the W&OD trail to Columbia Pike, stop at the store, then continue on Columbia to Braddock Road. I was making my trek out there to refinish a set of chairs and a dining room table and he had a great garage space to work on the project. To get back to DC, I come back on Edsall Road, get on South Van Dorn to Eishenhower and making my way back to the Mt Vernon Trail.
Even on a Sunday morning, Edsall Road is a terrible place to ride — freeway speeds, lots of freeway ramps, no usable sidewalks, and lots of road debris on the narrow shoulder. South Van Dorn isn’t much better, but Eisenhower’s fine.

ParticipantThe scrapes and bruises will make you look badass, but the torn jersey is just wrong. Stupid construction zones.

For even more motivation, here’s a comparison photo of the legs of a sedentary 74-yr-old man and a 70-yr-old triathlete:

Which would you rather be at that age?
Well, so much for second breakfast. Thanks!

Added Bonzai. But someone commented in the blog post that I’m missing ” Annandale Bike Shop”, but it is not showing up on Google. I can’t add it without an address. Anyone know if this is an actual place?
Yes, it’s a new shop in the 7200 block of Little River Turnpike in Annandale, behind Steinhorst Plumbing. I think they do repairs and sell used bikes.

ParticipantI once threw my back out sitting in church. I couldn’t stand up straight for two weeks.

There’s a second shop in Purcellville — Velo Classique. Nice small shop with lots of classic road bikes.

ParticipantSo if I take the family to brunch at Talulla, I can sneak out and look at bikes! Nice.

ParticipantOn these parking suggestions: are they for weekends only, or do they work for weekday commuting? My commute may be changing soon, and I may need to park closer to the W&OD to start out before I can do the full 18 miles each way from my house every day.

I’m beginning to wonder what exactly they’re doing that takes so long.
I wonder that about every project. I wish I had never learned that the Empire State Building took only a year to build – it’s ruined my perspective.

ParticipantNot to worry anymore — someone put traffic cones over the gap in the plates, so now instead of avoiding the narrow gap near the center line between the two lanes, you only have to worry about hitting the large traffic cones. Is there any problem that traffic cones can’t solve?

ParticipantDilemma: I’m opposed to pledges but in favor of winning (and riding) a bike. Sure, I plan to be car free that day, but I’m not going to promise to be.

Won’t that take the color out though? And not to sound stupid, but are you talking hydrogen peroxide?
No, I haven’t had it take color out yet. And yes, hydrogen peroxide. Whenever you see a cleaning product with “oxy” in the name, that’s the important ingredient.

If it makes you feel any better, I’m still trying to get the dirt stain out of the jersey that I was wearing when I hit the boardwalk back in late July. I keep throwing it into the laundry every time I do a load even though I’m not biking at the moment due to injury. That is some really stubborn dirt but I refuse to give up.
Pour some peroxide on it before the next wash.

ParticipantPerhaps spray some oil or wd40 (the duct tape of the lubricant world) in the lock mechanism.
