The city (DC that is) was out vacuuming up leaves from the 15th Street Cycletrack this morning. Yay! In places it was getting so that leaves completely covered the southbound lane, and even over into the NB here and there.

Glad to see they are paying attention.

They’ve been begged for weeks to do it. They’re treating it like any other curb in the city, which is typical. Refusing to acknowledge there’s a difference between “safe place to ride a bike” and “safe place to store a giant metal box at the public’s expense”.

They’re slowly making progress on this. Why they don’t just do the whole thing at once, I have no idea. Some sections were perfectly clear this morning. In one place, the track was entirely covered with leaves. The leaves are not really a problem at the moment, but they will be if they get wet and freeze… yuck!

This is my first year commuting on 15th, so I’ll be curious to see how aggressively the track is cleared of snow and ice in the winter. The city overall seems to take a pretty lax approach even to roads (maybe because things usually melt off in a few days), so my expectations aren’t high.
