ParticipantJust rode by where carlin spring crosses over the WOD. Totally clear from what I saw. Sure there’s ice and snow in the shady spots though.

ParticipantColumbia Pike to MVT looks to be passable on the WOD. Melting on the bridges now.

ParticipantIt’s probably a hardpack due to it being snow blowed, not plowed. Nice ideas for getting around!

Good report. Sorry I missed you this AM! I got off at Gallows and went down to Cottage to cut out the Gallows->Vienna stretch (thanks for that recommendation!). Then I rode up and west on Beulah to Clarks Crossing to cut out most of the W&OD from Vienna to Hunter Mill. Then from Hunter Mill, took Hunter Station & Glade (which I tend to do anyway). The small section of the W&OD that I did ride was slow, so I’m glad I cut out as much W&OD as possible.

I am /very/ happy that they plowed the W&OD trail from almost Gallows (Sandburg) east into Arlington. That made the commute just doable. (Of course, it still wanted studded tires this AM, as “plowed” here means “sheet of hardpack snow and ice”.)

ParticipantI’m still baffled by yesterday’s commute. Who’s salting under rte 50 and at Brandywine castle? And why aren’t they doing it just up the trail? There’s no method to the madness out there.
Does anyone know who salted those two areas?

Participantdkel! Follin Ave/Electric wasn’t too bad (IMO) this morning besides the fast cars flying by. There was some grit but totally doable. How were the patches on the trail?

Today I noticed a reduction in the size of those snowy/icy patches between a late morning run out to Vienna and an early afternoon run back to Falls Church. Admittedly, it’s going to be cooooold tonight, and there will be freezing, but my run this afternoon was pretty great. I did the Electric Ave route Wednesday morning, and as much as it was clear, it was also very gritty all the way out, and I think pretty harsh for the bike. I’m going to stick to the trail tomorrow; maybe you and I can compare notes then!

ParticipantI just don’t think the icy/snow patches between Park St. and Gallows in Vienna are going to stay as they are. Pretty sure they’re going to transform into more icy/slick patches so just going to take Electric/Follin Ave. Not that much out of the way…

Participant+1 for Bob’s idea. Who’s going to be the “John Hancock” of the bunch of signatures?

ParticipantSeveral sections west of Gallows to Park St in Vienna are passable in shady spots but my 32mm slicks were fine through this due to the dusting of snow on top of the ice providing some sort of traction. Personally, it seemed to help me lowering the PSI levels to 50/45.

ParticipantProbably too early for consideration. If you can, I’d wait for this question to be answered on the forum until at least tomorrow afternoon. I know of only one place that would present problems for sure – it’s called the “icebox” just after you cross Hunter Mill Rd going west to Reston. It’s just named that because it gets zero sun.

I’m planning to do a small group ride on the W&OD trail from Reston to Vienna this weekend. How is the trail looking? I heard there was some icy patches. Thanks

ParticipantSame here. But, wanted to point out. There’s quite a bit of thick ice on left your side (going west) on the 495 overpass just past va lane. Right side completely fine.

ParticipantColumbia Pike to MVT is working on it’s way of being totally dry from what I can see.

ParticipantThat’s what I fear.

ParticipantI’ve mentioned this on my Twitter account but news is that in Alabama they are about to pass a 3 foot law. In fact, all of the states in the south have all have passed 3 foot laws except NC & KY. The Senate Bill 3 foot bill in Alabama was proposed by a Republican near Tuscaloosa with a legislature where being a Democrat is extinct these days since the 2010 elections.
This makes it quite interesting. I think we need to point out to the more conservative legislators in VA that their fellow conservatives in these states already have passed this law, throwing out the general “22 (or whatever the accurate count now) other states have already passed this law” statement.
I know several legislators and senators personally in Alabama, if anyone think it would help, I could write to them to, in turn, write to these VA legislators that won’t budge.

ParticipantPretty minimal as you can see. I try to avoid anything on the bars – my Busch and Mueller light is below the handlebar bag, this puts the light squarely on the road and gets away from blinding folks, the (loud) Crane bell is on the stem, my GPS system is on the top of the bag, cell phone and wallet holders are the two pockets on the bag that you see, rounded out by whiskey bottle bar plugs. (Americancyclo’s directions are still up because you know, it’s going to snow on into May).
