ParticipantI just don’t think the icy/snow patches between Park St. and Gallows in Vienna are going to stay as they are. Pretty sure they’re going to transform into more icy/slick patches so just going to take Electric/Follin Ave. Not that much out of the way…

Today I noticed a reduction in the size of those snowy/icy patches between a late morning run out to Vienna and an early afternoon run back to Falls Church. Admittedly, it’s going to be cooooold tonight, and there will be freezing, but my run this afternoon was pretty great. I did the Electric Ave route Wednesday morning, and as much as it was clear, it was also very gritty all the way out, and I think pretty harsh for the bike. I’m going to stick to the trail tomorrow; maybe you and I can compare notes then!

ParticipantAmazing how sublimation can be so quick to make passages when the humidity is low in sub-freezing weather. Won’t be so easy on the rink in the shady apt. stretches between Spout and Rosslyn on the Custis, may as well just bring on the Zamboni!

They were still snowy when I rolled through at about 1pm this afternoon.

ParticipantEveryone probably already knows this, but the 14th Street Bridge, MVT and FMV to Shirlington are all clear and dry. There is still a very small ice patch just south of the bridge turn off on the Virginia side, but it’s easy to ride through. There’s also an almost trail-wide puddle just east of the curvy part of FMR near Glebe, but it’s very visible and can be carefully dodged for the most part.

Yep. I rode it this morning but chose to walk it this evening. Less snow cover meant more ice.

Participantdkel! Follin Ave/Electric wasn’t too bad (IMO) this morning besides the fast cars flying by. There was some grit but totally doable. How were the patches on the trail?

ParticipantAs an fyi, the RCP still has a few patches of snow (now really snow-packed ice) between Connecticut and I would guess P st area. It’s ok if you slow down and stop pedaling. I did almost take a spill the other day as a jogger decided it was a good idea to jut left in the middle of the ice park forcing me to move/play slip and slide. I get the impression these patches aren’t going anywhere since they were there pre-Wednesday’s snowfall and are in the shaded areas.

ParticipantOn the Custis, the rolling hills from Sprout Run to the Veitch St access were still packed snow/ice covered at 8 am this morning. If you stay to the side by the retaining wall it isn’t too bad. There were also a few icy spots where they always are (by the overpasses) and along St Ann Church, but they are short and if you take it easy it shouldn’t be a problem.

ParticipantMost of my commute was clear and dry (streets of Arlington, MVT to TR Bridge, streets of DC), but there were patches on the Custis. I rode from Veitch to Rosslyn, and the worst were just after the bridge and then just before Scott.
I reported those to Arlington via this website, with the note “Icy patch on the heavily traveled Custis trail. Mother Nature will not clear on its own.”. If you have rode over other patches, please report them. I’m hoping that will prevent the claim that they didn’t know there was still a problem on the trails.

The patches on the trail were a lot like last night, though slightly more icy. Generally, they are few, short, not particularly bumpy, and I found them very passable with only slight reduction in speed on my mostly slick 32s (Strava says my avg. overall was 12.4 mph). Also, most have a clear line somewhere (though that might require riding in the opposite lane–not a problem in 17 degree weather!), and there’s no grit, which makes me happy.
I think Follin/Electric is always a good route, and have taken it many times when I just didn’t feel like dealing with iffy trail conditions. Today was a solid B on the trail–maybe even a B+.

I rode it early this morning and it was more ice and less snow than before. Most of the same spots are still icy or snowy. Not much change.
Good news is that the W&OD from Reston West is good.
