ParticipantThe RadBot 1000 taillight used to have a nice moderate pulse that was recognizable without being seizure inducing. I use it in conjunction with a solid tail light, which gives a better sense of distance. Current RadBots ditch that mode for a slightly more aggressive pattern.

ParticipantWhat ominous weather this morning! I managed to shoot the gap in the radar, but it felt like the eye of a storm.

What gloves do you like for winter weather?
Cheapskate here: I use leather work gloves (no cloth back) and glove liners. They worked fine even on the coldest days last year. This year I upgraded to wool glove liners.
I have a set of Performance Brand cycling specific winter gloves, but they are cold and clammy outside their very specific temperature range (40-49F). I have a new set this year that I picked up on clearance for $10, but it hasn’t gotten cold enough to try them out.

As someone who may have abused this last year, I completely agree that the points for ride verse miles needs to be better aligned.
The National Bike Challenge actually went the other way (20 pt rides)! The free ten points encouraged me to get out on the bike even when it was bitter cold. We could incentivize the same behavior via some other mechanism (i.e., weight miles inversely proportional to the temperature), but that’s more complicated to set up/program.

ParticipantStrava removed their public API, so we’ll have to find a new backend for this year. I think there might be some solution where people can keep using Strava, but use tapiriik.com to sync their rides to DropBox or RunKeeper.
I have my dissertation defense scheduled for the 13th of December, and I won’t be able to pay much attention to BAFS until afterwards.

ParticipantSorry this happened to you. Humans can be quite inattentive. There’s only so much you can do with lighting without going to extreme measures.

Doesn’t sound like it’s worth the time, or the loss of one of my article views for the month.
If you’re using Chrome, that’s what right-clicking and hitting ‘Open Link in Incognito’ is for. (Firefox may or may not have something similar).

I think you might be right, but I also think that’s a confusion of “data” and “anecdote”.
Not really. We have all sorts of data on fatal crashes, data on injury types at hospitals, surveys on ridership and some vehicle counts. But what we really want to know is “given the general class of cyclists I belong to, what are my chances of injury/death.” We can answer that question much better for drivers than we can for cyclists.

ParticipantI read it as “there is plenty of data about cycling, it just doesn’t answer the questions you care about.”

This phone is a replacement for the (awesome) Galaxy S3 that I dropped and cracked the LCD.
Have you checked out repairing it yourself? I replaced the screen (not the digitizer glass) on my ancient DROID II. It took $12 in parts, $7 in tools, and an hour of fiddly and somewhat nerve wracking work. I figure it’s a 50-50 shot you screw something up, but that still makes repairing a broken phone cheaper than a $40 replacement. You’re welcome to the tools (torx drivers and pry tools) if we can arrange a transfer.

ParticipantThe BTWD route from Pooles Store (may it rest in peace) follows MacArthur, and so did Strava when I asked it to plot the route. I lived up in Beallsville for a while, but never biked in the area much. Depending on the hour, River Road will alternate between race way and traffic jam, but you probably know that.

ParticipantI’ve had both regular and longboard SKS 45s. The regular were fine in length once I added a mudflap. The front one eventually blew up on a trail (I think something got caught in it and the fender tried to invert itself).
The rear longboard is a great length to keep not only myself clean, but also anyone behind me. The front one is long enough that the rubber mudflap will catch the edge of a curb or stair unless I lift the front wheel a bit. I could use it a bit shorter (and may take a hacksaw to make that modification myself soon).

ParticipantI’m still debating whether to bike or bus in. I don’t mind getting soaked, but the half hour afterwards of cleaning is disheartening. I now have six rags caked in aluminum dust – all metal that was perfectly good rim on Wednesday.
