I checked the Suitland Bike Path out this morning, it is 100% clear. They even trucked out the big snow piles at each crossing. As a side benefit, the snow clearing removed a lot of the broken glass, used diapers, car parts and gravel piles.

When I saw that last night, I was amazed. Last year it was fun to suffer up that hill in the untouched snow. This year it had a lot more stuff plowed onto it than last year.

Did you see what shape the trail on the other side (east adjacent to Fort Myer) of Rt 50 is in? I assume like last year it is not been cleared.

    Jan 28 AM Reports:

S Wash Blvd/Rt 27 Pentagon Path – clear with some ice spots.
LBJ Park – ice and packed snow everywhere, bridge over channel included, evne the parking lot was icy, must have skipped on the salt
Mt Vernon Tr near George Mason Memorial Bridge and Merchant Marine Memorial – this morning was frozen solid deep snow. The snow fence did it’s job of packing snow on the one side. Will be crazy this eve when thawed.
Penn Ave Bridge – Northern sidewalk was cleared few days ago, however, melting snow has covered it with smooth ice. How I did not fall amazes me. Western entrance has no piles, just snow & ice. Eastern entrances has big piles. Southern sidewalk never cleared, horrid.
Anacostia in general – Great. DC cleared parking spacing and bike lanes just about everywhere, so the streets are just about full width

I saw a semi-verified FB post that WMATA will close bus operations Friday at 5, the trains at 11, and be closed all weekend.

I may start turning it off then. Based on the muddy stream, this has been running a lot for a long time.

If installed correctly they are freeze proof.

I wonder if this one has the drain hole at all or set up correctly. Of course the freeze line at LBJ is pretty close to the surface.

I forgot another good one. A perfectly fine M971 XTR rear derailleur. I found it during the first year of the MoCo Epic. I posted everywhere, had the organizer include it in the follow up email, and talked about it a lot on group rides. No one ever said it was theirs. It was attached to a replaceable dropout that had broken off. I wondered how did it escape the chain. Assume somebody had a big drive train debacle that both snapped the hanger and broke the chain and sent it flying off into the underbrush.

I just installed it on my touring bike, so if it is yours, too late.

My experience has shown that CX tires are much better than normal width MTB tires in dry/fluffy snow. How/why? The CX tire cuts down further into the snow and can grip the ground and/or more firm and damp snow near the ground. If you look at a fresh profile of deep dry/fluffy snow, the bottom layers usually are wetter due to the soil heating the bottom of the pile. A normal MTB tire, say a 2.25″, floats too much on the snow but not enough like a fat bike can.

The Loose Rules on my challanges:

    #1 Most states:
In a single day of continuous riding, ride in the most states possible. Must include either VA, MD or DC. (DC does count as a state) No shuttling or multimodal allowed. (so no riding through DC, VA, MD and then taking the train to PA)

Bonus Points for tie breaking: starting and ending in the same state, shortest distance, 2x for including another country (embassy grounds do not count)

Prize: Some found/made prize and bottle of rye whiskey. Alternative to the rye is a $50 donation in your name to what ever bike charity you want

    #2 Most Bike shops:

I may want to change this to something else, the most Food for All Dc Deliveries. But I need to check on something before doing that.

The only way to get it off finally was to cut through the Kevlar bead of the tire.

I found my photo of this cutting.

For those of us who do not participate in Freezing Saddles the “New Posts” selection on the menu is useless. Is there some way to suppress all the Freezing Saddles posts? No offense to the Frezzing Saddles crowd. Thx

The real fix is to start non-BAFS threads that are interesting, fun, thought provoking, and/or gather a lot of attention.

Maybe I could start one: I’ll post a thread about how even after I move away, I plan to flag segments in DC.

Let me check on some things, but I will commit to running one Sat Jan 23rd and/or Sat Jan 30th. I cannot run one Sat Feb 6th as I am having a meeting with MORE and REI about Fort Dupont.
