I have heard of donut and fried chicken places but this idea is revolting to me — all one deep fryer, or separate for the sweet and savory?

Nonetheless, when the weather finally turns warm again, my son will probably resume his high school bike commute and this is the spot I use for the turnaround point.

    @americancyclo
, weren’t you the one who taught me just to ride down Route 7?

    Liz

I believe the place also allows you to order one or the other (I’ll be doing both, because I’ll try most things once). I’ve used 7 to get to this Whole Foods too, but that is no less of a mood-murder. The trouble with 7 is all the people trying to drive on it, really.

, you’ll likely be fine getting home either on the streets or the trail (just keep your wits about you if you take the trail).

Sweet! If the plow went all the way to Vienna (which I’m hoping it did), commuty extendies may occur too!

(Though my legs have been screaming bloody murder from dragging the SS MTB through snow both yesterday and today.)

Thanks, I’ll try this WD40 and tenacious oil business. (Or not. I’m lazy and will end up riding fixed.)

    Freewheel removal tool obtainment time!

Bottom line….I think we’d better eat more pie.

It is as I suspected. Pie is always the answer.

I have the same problem, even though I never flipped the wheel to run single speed. It’s not worth the effort to try to open it up, even if possible, because it is so cheap. I would think the “ratcheting” mechanism is stuck in one position and the springs are rusted. Perhaps the answer is to throw it in mineral spirits for a month to see if that unsticks it. If it does, then you might want to put it in used motor oil for another month to lube it.

Well. That seems tedious. Looks like it’s time for the ice fixie to dance again.

Falls Church? More like Tysons purgatory, really.

I’m up for this, but this involves riding Idylwood in the morning, which is one of those things that is Not Cool At All, Jack.

How are these on the ice? I’ve been intrigued by these things.

Late, but about a week ago, I saw Senor Cannon leaving with a pie. For once, it was he who was leaving when I arrived.

Also crossed paths with Phatboing on my new, later hours commute. Recognized the beard and big grin!

Wha? And you’re saying I was present for this encounter?

I slogged through snow, overheated, then got a flat, overheated some more while pumping up the ridiculously high-volume tire, then got a thumbs-up from a driver as I continued on my way. What a blast.

WOD westbound from EFC: Some kind soul with a contraption has packed down the snow from Little Falls to just beyond Citizens bridge. With chubbly knobblies, it’s a whole lotta fun.

Of course, the untouched-by-contraption stretch from the rest stop thingy past Citizens Bridge until Shreve is torture – the snow’s not fluffy enough to just plow through, and it’s not packed down enough to float over. Took surface streets after that.

Idylwood Rd isn’t plowed, just packed. Oak St from Providence to Gallows is a slushy muckfest. Gallows Rd (including the bike shoulder) is packed down, and actually rather nice, were it not for the fact that people are in idiot mode on Gallows Rd.

My CX/commuter has a 50/34 and 11/32. It’s the 34 I’m not crazy about. I used it on Kill Bill, in races, and with studs, but otherwise it feels too small. It’s actually too small in races, too, but 50 isn’t happening.

What about splitting the difference: 1x and switching to a 11-34?

Or a triple (26-36-46, maybe?) with the innermost ring repurposed as an emergency ninja star? I have no idea if the front mech will work with the two rings, but the ninja star…

I like my compact with the 11-28. At Kill Bill I was wishing for a 11-34, or even a triple, but my training for that was having lots of beer and pulled pork the night before, so this perspective is suspect.

Not entirely relevant, but on the Fargo I used to have an MTB triple with a road cassette, and that thing was ready to party on most surfaces.

(Now it has 11-34, and is ready to party on ALL surfaces)
