So it turns out that you CAN get a lot of crud off the gears with just an old tooth brush and a paper towel.

That sounds fancy! I clean my derailleur pulleys with twigs.

Nando’s was giving away free bottles of Peri-Peri sauce ’cause obviously I can use that while bike commuting. At least it wasn’t raining.

Sauce: duh, squirt that at chasing dogs.
Rain: I like what rain does for my BTWD raffle odds.

Man, the CC BID is awesome. And it’s always nice to see other forum folks at that lovely park.

Thanks. What did the chief say?

Also I don’t know whether I should be impressed at the consistency or appalled at the callousness when even a member of the Traffic and Parking Board like Casey can’t get the police department to write a report on a collision he was involved in. That’s incredible.

WTF is this $1500 nonsense? When did this start? Did anyone ask the new police chief about this when he attended the BPAC meeting?

It is honestly pretty weird that we have this split in Alexandria between “City of” and “postal zone that’s part of Fairfax.”

    No, I’m afraid it’s not.

“Ever since the ZIP Code system for identifying address locations was devised in the 1960s, some citizens have wanted to change the ZIP Code to which their addresses are assigned. Because ZIP Codes are often not aligned with municipal boundaries, millions of Americans have mailing addresses in neighboring jurisdictions”

FYI there are also City of Alexandria parcels with Arlington addresses, and single family home parcels that have the City boundary cut through them.

For steel ones? Cutting soft copper is one thing, and aluminum alloys likely not much more demanding, but steel alloys I would expect to be much tougher to cut.

I think you should try a thinner lubricant that would be more likely to interfere with the existing rust. Personally I would try Boeshield T-9 both to attack existing rust and prevent more from forming, and I would try to move the bolts before things worsen.

I’m sure rockford is thrilled if all you’re doing is talking. Do you have a build project lined up for this summer yet?

That was with the old bridge (20 feet lower) and before the Washington Post stopped having newsprint arrive on barges. It is much less often now.

And back when they used their Alexandria riverfront warehouse, before convincing the city to increase their development rights so they could sell the warehouse parcel to a hotel company?

Another observation: the money added to include the drawbridge on WWB would have paid for all the work needed now for Memorial Bridge.

Thanks! Wikipedia says the projection was 60 openings per year. At that rate, likely $50,000-$100,000 per opening, but based on these announcements it seems the bridge actually only opens one tenth that often, putting the cost around $500k-$1m per opening, $1m-2m per round trip. Does the Navy actually have fighting ships tall enough to need the drawbridge that can sail the Potomac? Quick searches suggest the really big boats like destroyers and aircraft carriers need 30-40′ of water but the channel just south of WWB is only about 20′, and there’s not enough tidal variation to make that navigable even at high tide, regardless of headroom / airspace.
