ParticipantBei den armen Deutschen scheint aber auch alles geregelt zu sein. Gluecklicherweise gefaellt’s Ihnen so.

ParticipantDoes it absolutely have to be random…or can I help pick who gets flung?

ParticipantAgain, for anyone wishing to express their concerns directly to the Park Superintendent, here is Ms. Dottie Marshall’s email address: GWMP_Superintendent@nps.gov
Giving the benefit of the doubt for just a moment—it appears that someone had the sense to leave a gap in the new speed bump to allow bikes to swing wide for the turn without having to hit the bump. It’s still bad placement and doesn’t address the underlying design flaw(s), but hey.OneEighth

That’ll wreck the line of your suit pants. Better to shower off and go commando. Scotland Forever!
Either that or just keep spare socks and shorts in the office.OneEighth
ParticipantBettybryan,
If you are trying to lean out, there are several things that may help. Sorry if I’m telling you something you already know.
Eat less but much more frequently. I’m talking every few hours.
Try to build exercise into more than one part of the day—this is where commuting by bike can be very helpful because you burn calories at both ends. Trick is to not increase your intake more than necessary. Also, only put back what you absolutely need at the end of the day so that you can recover enough to do it again the next day.
Find something that you really like, can/will do regularly as well as frequently, and can/will do for the long haul. Again, commuting by bike can be helpful here.
While biking does engage your core and arms, it is clearly leg heavy. If you are looking for something that hits your upper body as well as your legs and can absolutely rip weight off, I would suggest rowing—many gyms have Concept II indoor rowers. But, you need to have someone who really knows what they are doing teach you proper technique or you risk injury and/or wasting your time. The better your technique, the harder it gets. The Concept II site should have information on proper technique. That’ll hit your arms, back, legs, and core, though you’ll still want to do something additional to balance out all the pulling/back exercise.
Good luck. I hope whatever you decide on is fun!OneEighth
ParticipantDid I pass you by the Roosevelt Island parking lot?
The river sang such a sweet song this morning that I had to go play and consequently didn’t get on my bike until after 9, when all the pit stops had closed. Looks like it was a big success based on the photos.
If you spot me this evening, please holler.OneEighth
ParticipantYou realize that acquiring a bamboo bike puts you at risk for endless panda-inflicted purgatory beginning very early on Sunday…

ParticipantI hear ya. I wring out my socks over the plants in my office. Gray water management, how green is that?!?
OneEighth
ParticipantI would but it might violate the terms of my participation in the witness protection program.
Honestly, I expect to come into DC via Alexandria early on Friday, but I’ll be easy enough to spot if I do make it to Rosslyn—black, unmarked fixie with bullhorns wrapped with white tape and a white saddle. Probably wearing a white short-sleeved jersey with a big black stripe down each sleeve.
Holler if you see me.OneEighth
ParticipantNow I really do feel ashamed. I was up then and opted for the car to go to the boathouse because I didn’t want to be sopping wet at practice. Ended up wet anyway because the Potomac was a bit rough and kept splashing over the gunwales…
AND, because I was in a car, I missed the opportunity to rip into the ass I watched mess up a car mirror trying to squeeze his bicycle between traffic waiting at a light and the parked cars—just so he could make an illegal (and very wobbly) right on red at a blind intersection.
If there is one thing that I hate about this time of year, it is the higher incidence of idiotic behavior that seems to be a natural by-product of more riders. Actually, it’s the natural by-product of more people generally, but I get annoyed about the cyclists in particular because the idiots then serve as poster children for what’s supposedly wrong with the rest of us who have a clue.
Done venting.
Good for you for riding today, CCrew.OneEighth
ParticipantStop lines, etc are a good idea, but the intersection is too narrow for safe turning even at reasonably slow speeds. You just can’t turn a bike 90 degrees even from a stop.

ParticipantLooks awesome. Definitely give me a heads-up (with loads of warning as She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed controls time, space, and the family event calendar). Looks like something for the alleged Surly.

ParticipantJust widening the intersection of the two trails to make turning easier would be a big improvement.

ParticipantI didn’t hit the road until 5 yesterday and then had to beat feet north. Sorry I missed out.
