ParticipantAn M-1 weighs 60 tons. The weight limit on the Memorial Bridge is 10 tons. The damage to DC streets could be mitigated with weight limits. A parade is a really bad idea nonetheless.

ParticipantCrochetedy Georgetown residents not taking well to dockless bikeshare. One resident encouraging others to “call 911 immediately when you see someone using the bikes, and to snap photos and videos of all individuals using the orange, green, yellow, and now red bikes.”

Take a look at this mess of abandoned bikeshare bikes in China!

ParticipantI know right. Just ask the officer on foot with the radar gun on the CCT. I’ve never seen him stop anyone, but I don’t see how that would work without really creating some safety issues.
The trails weren’t designed for high speeds at high volumes, but that’s where we seem to be heading.

ParticipantThere were four Limebikes (two upright, two thrown on ground) just off the MVT at the entrance to National Airport maintenance lot early this afternoon. Not a good look.

ParticipantSaw my first kitted-up e-biker this week. So I think there might be a market for the well-concealed ebike.

Speaking of rain, does anyone have any good recommendations for waterproof gear that won’t break the bank? I’ve got stuff that’s wonderful in bitter freezing weather, but my gloves and shoe covers just soak through in cold, heavy rain and then I’m miserable with numb extremities.
I use these boot rain covers designed for motorcyclists. I don’t clip in on my commuter. The bottoms of theses are open so you can walk and ride in them without slipping or damaging them. They fit over regular shoes and keep them dry even in the heaviest rain. They are pretty bulky, but that’s a trade off I can accept to keep my feet dry. They work best with shoes that have some kind of rubber bottom to keep the water out from below.

Weather Underground has cut the forecast rain amount by nearly half and pushed the worst of the rain later in the day. It’s gonna be a beautiful day.
WBOC is now saying it’s gonna a be little wetter.

I’m going to ride on up to 50 states from Alexandria in time to depart around 8am. I plan on getting lost several times for lack of being able to follow a cue sheet, following randos up the wrong roads, and then bailing sometime around noon because my legs hurt or just for grouchy reasons, or maybe finishing. If anybody else is interested in this plan they are welcome to join me.
That’s an ambitious plan, LSG, especially if doing the whole ride. I am almost tempted to do this, but the 50 States is a grind, especially the back half. I always ride back to Alexandria afterwards, but on a hot day that extra 11 miles is going to flatline the Polar funmeter.

ParticipantA big one in the draft plan is the idea to work with Alexandria to route the MVT around Jones Point Park, not through it. Not sure what that would look like. The “Bicycle-Friendly City” has never had a serious plan for routing bikes through the city safely and efficiently.

ParticipantI used to cross this intersection all the time and had many problems there. Several times drivers yelled at me for not being in the crosswalk (to the left). I was nearly hit more than once just like this. The drivers are looking to the right because so many people run that light. We bikes are coming off a trail and there is no opposing car traffic with us so drivers just aren’t looking for or expecting anybody to be coming straight across. Pedestrians use the crosswalk. The trail there should be better marked somehow. I gave up arguing with drivers and just take the crosswalk now.

ParticipantMultiple run-ins with Pokemon Goers the past few days on the CCT. One teen riding along at a good clip (17 mph or so) slammed on the breaks with no warning as I was getting ready to pass. (Near the playground in Bethesda). Saw several different people stopped on the west end of the bridge over the C&O canal on different days. Something must be there. There is another spot north of GU/the horrid smell where people have been stopping sometimes in groups.
The worst was a teenage girl who was following her phone and abruptly crazy Ivaned right into the opposite lane north of the tunnel causing an oncoming cyclist to dodge her.
Be safe out there! They gotta catch em all.

ParticipantI’ve lived in Del Ray, Old Town, Fort Hunt and Mount Vernon so I’m pretty familiar with the MVT and its crossings.
Crossing the GWP at Belle Haven or Belle View is horrible. Avoid at all costs. Crossing at Tulane is not bad. Crossing at the stone bridge on Alexandria Ave is easy. We live in Old Town because we like small and walkable, but if I was doing it again I would think harder about Arlington. The combination of its great location, bike friendliness, and good schools makes up for the less than walkable character so many of its neighborhoods. Oh and it seems to have fewer hardcore anti-cycling curmudgeons than Alexandria.
