WaPo’s review of the 4 dockless bikeshare options.
Apparently the e-bike option (which launches Monday,) requires being locked to a bike rack when it’s not in use. This doesn’t make me happy since it’s already tough enough to find an open bike rack around many parts of DC without extra bikes using them up…But I am now kinda tempted to try an e-bike when I need to get to meetings across town.
Interesting. I’m not sure how the Jump folks are going to make any money if they’re chasing their bikes all over the city to replace batteries.
Edit: Just looked at their website and my initial evaluation is that this company will burn through their start up cash and go out of business pretty quickly.

ParticipantSo, Jump is hiring.

ParticipantNot sure if they are supposed to be in VA, but there were two lime bikes on the VA side of Boundary Channel. They were parked at the top of the ramp on the Pentagon side of the bridge by the LBJ grove. I did not see anyone hanging around site seeing at 7:30am this morning in the area. Just the usual cyclists and runners. So, if they are supposed to remain in DC, they already escaped. Not the best place to park them either, but they were not in the way if no one else was coming through there. Good thing neither the morning Army or Navy runners were amassing in that location today.

ParticipantGGWash comparison of dockless systems (no review of Jump yet). With some explanation of how things work; e.g., rebalancing crews go pick up bikes outside the geofencing, and the ring in the basket of a Mobike is actually a bottle holder.

ParticipantWe saw an entire herd of lime bikes in the wild yesterday, on the Anacostia River Trail just south of Kenilworth Gardens. There are a few CaBi stations near there already, but it’s still a promising development.

ParticipantThere were four Limebikes (two upright, two thrown on ground) just off the MVT at the entrance to National Airport maintenance lot early this afternoon. Not a good look.

Huh, that’s two more than were there 24 hours earlier…

Well, at least the ones on the VA side of the LBJ grove aren’t multiplying. They were still there this morning, but still only two. And I think that is a shady spot, so chances that their batteries are running down are growing.

Visual. I think their redistribution efforts need improvement.

ParticipantThat location could just fall within the GPS margin of error and so didn’t trigger a geofencing notification, since the border is only a couple of feet from where the bikes are parked.

The Pentagon is technically in DC according to the United States Postal Service.

I thought they weren’t allowed on NPS land, such that the Mall (and Columbia Island) are carved out.

Good point…although looking at the posts about all these bikes, it appears that only Mobike provides a map of the disallowed areas. I guess the others just charge a fee whenever they get around to picking the bikes up.

It is not the only VA-based federal entity with a DC mailing address…
