ParticipantNot gonna make the ride after all. Have a great time! I’ll try to make the next group thing, when I don’t have an enticing 20 something distracting me late at night….[emoji1]

ParticipantHey Judd

Also can just say that tryna mesh schedules with my 21 yr old party girl is somewhat challenging! [emoji38]

ParticipantWell this is a relief to me actually. I don’t stop to offer help when I’m riding alone and a man is pulled over – but I feel bad about it because strangers have pulled over to offer me help, and I’ve taken them up on it at least once. And I moved here from the Boston area, where strangers mostly ignore you if you talk to them….. So I think it’s nice that people offer, and I’d like to be one of the good guys ….
But the statistics were 1 in 3 women raped in our lifetime when I was raped in the middle of a beautiful afternoon in the 80s. My son says it’s 1 in 5 now, so here’s hoping the, uhm, white house role model doesn’t roll us all the way back… My rape was pretty low grade – 15 minutes and the guy wasn’t even nasty (like he’d seen too many car ads on TV with sexy women standing beside the car, and figured he was entitled to one…)
So anyhow, I know most of the guys pulled over on the side of the trail are just out for a ride, but how easy would it be to lure someone….? So I usually don’t, unless it’s a woman or a guy who somehow looks less threatening. Just not worth the risk.
Which brings me to this:

Oh yeah, can I also mention that this did not happen 2 years ago when I was not quite a gray beard. But now that I am a gray beard, if I dare to stop beside the trail – I must obviously be having an F’ing heart attack or something. I must be enfeebled. I must be in desperate need of assistance.
……..
The young guy doesnt get asked. The person who is just walking without a bicycle doesnt get asked. The person walking a dog doesnt get asked. And so on.
.I wonder how many people avoided stopping to offer you help before and now find you to look less risky. My back story would apply more to women than men, but guys hurt guys too, though not usually via rape.
Also I don’t think you can compare yourself to pedestrians & dog walkers – because the main thing people are offering help about is gonna be mechanical issues with the bike.

Alas, none of the above. I’m here at the computer, feeling completely hung-over after the late night on Hains Point (even though I didn’t drink), and I’ve got four different weather-forecast tabs open. I keep checking and hoping for a miracle. I’m not sure what we should do about tomorrow night’s celebration. Back in December, March 21 seemed like the best date by far – based on innumerable phonecalls and emails to try and work around vacations, school schedules, and observance days of all faiths… it seemed like most everyone could make it. Now it may be the day on which almost nobody can make it. Eeek!
I wrote to the substitute-manager at Bier Baron (the manager is on vacation this week) and am waiting to hear back. I’m asking… will Bier Baron stay open in a storm if the city shuts down (assuming we don’t cancel)? And what about a plan B… do they have any openings in the first two weeks of April (after all the religious holidays and school breaks) and if so on which days?
I’ve not yet heard back, but at Bier Baron they don’t really start the work day until about 5 pm so they may not see my email until then. And in the meantime I will keep refreshing these darn weather tabs on my laptop. I know that a lot of folks have worked hard to arrange their schedules around March 21, and some have even flown in for this event, so I’m not eager to re-schedule. I will report back later after consultations with Bier Baron.
I’m planning to come unless it’s impassable, and thanks for all your hard work about this. If it needs to be rescheduled I’ll also plan to come to the rescheduled event.
I’m hoping to caravan with people coming from NoVA- but I spoze if it’s better for driving than biking (which seems unlikely) we can carpool….

Rule Five! Why didn’t we think of that for a team name?? As the captain of the extra large team I apologize for not noticing (sooner than I did) that an extra member joined. I was probably notified that one had been replaced by another but I’m terrible at reading email. So I added both riders to our team. Sorry! Subtract 8.3% (one twelfth) from our final score.
I thought you were gonna apologize here for not having thought of “Rule Five” as the team name. And then leave this discussion the f@ck alone! [emoji1]

As a New Englander I used to agree. But six years in this place has corrupted me. I’ve grown soft.
As sometime who grew up in Puerto Rico – and then spent 20 years in Boston – I say we have plenty winter here for me.

First, this isn’t a question of rules. Team 5 had a player who didn’t join up. The player was replaced. Then the player finally joined. At this point there are two options – kick someone out, or let it ride. I think letting it ride was the correct choice. Some may disagree, but it wasn’t a rule violation decreed by The Dark Cabal of Volunteers.
Second – there isn’t a Dark Cabal of Volunteers. This IS a democracy. Everyone who plays the game is part of it. Opinions and criticism are accepted. Personally, I have a fairly low tolerance for criticism of creating and managing the teams. It is an enormous amount of work, and we are all lucky that Sunyata is nicer than me (and, perhaps, that she doesn’t have the database password).
And last, if there WERE a Cabal, it would be hozn and I, because we DO have the database password.
I applaud your decision. And back before he figured out how he’d ended up with a team of 12, Rod asked me if I knew what his team had looked like at the opening happy hour (as he’d seen me taking pictures of the team assignments.) He told me he had a mystery 12th person and was tryna figure out who, because he figured he’d hafta boot him /her.
I encouraged him to let it ride – because imagine if you were that 12th person, riding and checking in your team standings, and getting out to sleaze on bad weather days, and then suddenly your captain tells you you’re off the team? For some random reason? Oh no. I’m happy to have my team by in 4th place if that’s what it costs to avoid booting a player!

Just to scramble things up a bit, I think the final standings should be based on the scores of the last 8 players on each team. That would reward the teams with great teamwork more than the ones with a couple of heroes.
Hmm. Seems like a good pointless prize opportunity. Didn’t someone award the “All Pulling Together” award last year?
Yes, and we’re gonna do it again this year. I didn’t even realize it had been done before! But it’s not based on the scores of the last 8 players – you’d have to make a whole nother silly prize for that one.
