ParticipantI noticed that Bird eScooters occupy less footprint than a bike.

Is this the thread in which we might respectfully request the forum move to https? The Let’s Encrypt project makes it very easy.
That might stop some older phones from working because there were recent changes to how https works. Not all sites were affected. It depends on who upgrade their server to the latest protocols. Some sites stopped working for me, such as REI. I had to download Firefox mobile to access some sites, but it uses more data and therefore more battery life. It’s possible to support both https and older phone by enabling older “unsecure“ protocols.

ParticipantUsually for new comers the first thing I look at is “Location” before I respond. But there is one that says “Arlington”, but I think is a spammer. Here is post 1 with a link to a generic site. Another post promoting a company in China.

Got a flat on the Mount Vernon Ave overpass on Four Mile Run. Somebody broke a bottle in there. Another fellow cyclist said that he cleaned it while I was changing the flat. Hope it is not a regular occurrence.
What tire were you using?

ParticipantThe biggest factor that helped me lube more often is putting two things next to my bike: Chain lube(on a shelf next to the bike), and chain measuring tool(hanged on a wall, using a nail). So they are on full sight every time I take the bike. What oil to use almost doesn’t matter as long as you are lubing more often. Everybody seems to have their favorite lubing method that swear by. There is no wrong way to lube(Almost), just focus on more lubing, and less about which oil/grease to use.

ParticipantI have gone to the shops around many times, and here is the route I suggest, which is also what Google suggests(Google maps link), which is 90% paved side path. Starting from Giant in the north, you ride on the side path in the same direction as the traffic, then switch to the other side by using a tunnel next to the Container store(Street view of the tunnel). There are both stairs and a ramp to get you to the Container store area(Google Satellite view). A side path takes you the rest of the way to the W&OD.
Many who leave the W&OD to get to Reston Parkway miss the east side path, and wait to cross Reston Parkway to the other side. In this Street View of the intersection with Bluemont Way, there are two crosswalks. To the right, is where one comes up from the W&OD. The crosswalk further away in the picture is the one that leads to the east side path, and you don’t need a beg button to cross it. The closer crosswalk leads to a dead end, so many assume there is no continuation except on the other side, but there is.

The RadWagon has arrived. This is the heaviest, clumsiest bike I’ve ever ridden and the first bike to truly put an idiot grin on my face at the first stroke of the pedals.
So, are you going to buy a baby trailer, two batteries, and dress them up as babies to get preferential treatment?

ParticipantThat’s nothing compared to Metro’s plan to reduce Orange/Silver/Blue line trains to every 20 Minutes(16 Minutes for Blue line) during rush hour for two weeks, starting August 11.

ParticipantClose one eye for 5 minutes so it adjusts to the dark, you know; like a pirate, then look at your light. You need to go slow while doing this test, because Ninjas are hard to see. l did a similar test and my light was brighter than I thought it was. Apparently, just seeing the trail with my light, which is kind of a spotlight, was enough for my eyes to adjust away from darkness that other trail users have adopted to.

ParticipantGo to Google Maps, zoom in really close(in the default map mode, not satellite mode) and you should see property boundaries based on public records, so you can tell which property it’s part of.
Some home owners are seniors, or with disabilities, so they may or may not be able to do it themselves.

ParticipantWe have Capital Bikeshare rental, which is cheap, but the bikes are heavy. Locally, Spokes, etc may or may not have bike rental. They used to be $30/Day, but mostly upright hybrids. I live near their Vienna, VA location and they don’t seem to offer them anymore. Green Lizard Cycling is another, but it’s $100/Day and some unknown amount per week or weekend, and they have decent road bike options. I am not sure about bike shops in Arlington and DC as I don’t visit these shops often.

ParticipantTysons area: Sidewalks along RT-7 under RT-123 bridge have been largely completed. Visibility is okay, worst area is when going east as bridge columns obscure cars, but it’s better than I expected. I didn’t have trouble crossing the two times I tried. Going west is blocked by current construction of adjacent new tall building, but it should finish in few months.

Route 7 over Dulles Toll Road intersection(See Google maps) is getting grade-separated multi-use paths(MUP) to be completed by Spring 2018. I saw two long ramps leading to two pedestrian bridges on both sides of RT7/Leesburg Pike from the east/south side of RT7. It looks like they would finish in few weeks, but VDOT says Spring 2018. The MUP would be 14 Feet wide, and will tie to future trails according to VDOT:

Looking west:
Looking east:
In Tysons area, pedestrians bridges along Route 7(Leesburg Pike) over Dulles Toll Road intersection have been completed as of May 22nd. Now you can pass through freely without taking long detours. The trail is grade separated with good visibility. The only area to watch out for is when going east along RT 7 and crossing Jarrett Valley Dr. Beware of right hooking. I noticed some cars turning right at speed despite the road being at a 90º angle. See Google Street View here. There is a paved trail now to the right.
West of the intersection there is not much connecting trails, but a trail construction would begin next year and ends by 2025. It would add 6.9 Miles of shared use paths on both sides of Route 7. Currently, the speed limit west of the intersection is between 45 and 55 MPH, so I won’t recommend it at this time.

ParticipantObviously, the best clothes for cycling are cycling clothes. They are usually a tight fit, so any sweat that develops gets wicked away resulting in a cooling effect. See also: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cycling_jersey
