1/29/24 — LEGGY
While I do know what this word means, I instead chose to photograph the most leggy—i.e., legs-intensive—hill on my commute. Here it is.

- ⚠️⚠️ Columbia Pike service roads/path from Lincolnia Rd to Blair Rd completely snow-covered, not treated
- Columbia Pike (main roadway) eastbound slushy/icy at the tip of Lake Barcroft
- Blair Rd from Columbia Pike to Glencarlyn Dr snowy but passable
- ⚠️⚠️ Glencarlyn Dr from Blair Rd to Manchester St bike lanes not treated; severe ice on bike lanes and car lanes between Leesburg Pike and Manchester St
- ⚠️ Manchester St from Glencarlyn Dr to Rt 50 icy
- Manchester St from Rt 50 to Bluemont Park heavily salted, no ice or snow
- ⚠️⚠️ Bluemont Park parking lot and entrance/egress completely untreated, ice patches under snow, use extreme caution
- Bluemont Junction trail from 4MR trail to Wilson Blvd snowy, not much ice yet, less coated than Bluemont Park parking lot (so possibly treated under the snow?)
- Wilson Blvd clear into Clarendon; numerous buses parked blocking bike lanes in vicinity of Clarendon Metro
- ⚠️ Clarendon side streets (Highland, 11th) icy; use caution

melancholeraParticipantAround 3pm on 1/9, there was minor flooding on the Bluemont Junction trail and Four Mile Run trail through Bluemont Junction. Flooding was worse on the path running along Columbia Pike past the tip of Lake Barcroft.
melancholeraParticipantIn light of the National Weather Service warning to avoid unnecessary travel, I’ve changed my plans and will be sitting this one out. I just biked home from work in the storm (yuck) and am not keen on the 5-mile ride from the nearest Metro station in these conditions after dark. Stay safe and have fun, everyone!

What else would one call this giant spool of replacement electrical line (found on my commute along Columbia Pike) if not a LINER?
melancholeraParticipantI’ll be there!

melancholeraParticipantThe path paralleling Columbia Pike (with a shunt off to Holmes Run Trail) at the tip of Lake Barcroft is a gnarly chunky ice sheet — nearly wiped out this morning on my commuter bike with 30mm Gatorskins. Photo is from about halfway up on the Bailey’s Crossroads side, but the Annandale side is about the same.

melancholeraParticipantA couple highlights from my commute today:
* Wood trail bridge across Holmes Run at the tip of Lake Barcroft, parallel to Columbia Pike, has a one-shovel-width ice-free path carved through it (bless the kind person who did this). Paved path up towards Bailey’s Crossroads is clear; other direction is still full of crunchy footprints and black ice in the afternoon. Photos are from the morning.

* Glen Carlyn Dr has lots of plowed snow heaps in the bike lane from Leesburg Pike to Rt 50
* Bluemont Junction Trail is completely clear from W&OD to Fairfax Dr
* Fairfax Dr has lots of plowed snow heaps and random ice patches in the bike lane (both directions) between 66 and ClarendonmelancholeraParticipantHi! California transplant here excited for my first Freezing Saddles!
