MCL1981Participant
There are such things as removable bollards. They go in a hole and usually have a pad lock on a collar at ground level. That way legit maintenance and emergency vehicles can remove it, drive in, and replace it. These should be at EVERY intersection with a road. No excuse not to and cyclists complaining about them have their priorities wrong.
MCL1981ParticipantMaybe staying in our secluded grove until after traffic dissipates would be the best plan :p
MCL1981ParticipantSounds like this needs to be more of an all afternoon event given the parking situation. Maybe we’ll go down around noonish to get a parking spot. Hopefully a good spot with fast easy evac onto the parkway. Go for a bike ride in the afternoon, maybe into Alexandria for lunch. Then we can go claim our grove along the river as evening approaches. Bring dinner with us. As far as lights to make the return trip to Gravely with the bikes, that will not be an issue. Remember this?

I would absolutely be ticketed and towed if I did that. The other 1000 people would get away with it. But not me.
MCL1981ParticipantHow would parking at LBJ compare to GP?
MCL1981ParticipantI’m thinking of driving down to Gravely Point in the evening with my “friend”. We’re both plane nuts so we’ll probably be drooling over airplanes for a while there. Then walk up the MVT to find a nice spot around 7:30 or so. I was hoping it wouldn’t be crowded and we’d have a grove to ourselves, but oh well.
MCL1981ParticipantCan I also order the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch?
MCL1981ParticipantI’m really hoping for an actual winter this year. I got an additional set of wheels so I can “hot swap” based on weather. I have road tires and light weight rims for anything but snow and ice. Then I have studded snow tires on my old mountain bike rims. If there is going to be snow/ice, it takes about 3 minutes to change. I only had one opportunity to use them last year since winter sucked. I swear, I feel like I have better traction on packed snow and ice then I did on dry pavement with road tires. I could accelerate without and slipping. Turn without falling. And it stopped like I was glued to the trail. Southbound cruising speed is about 15-18mph and that was absolutely no problem.

MCL1981ParticipantMetro can not handle the PEOPLE at rush hour. There is no way bicycles should or will ever be allowed into the system at rush hour. People will be seriously hurt or killed. No excuse or stretch like “allow it only at certain stations” will ever fly. Once you’re in, you are into the whole system. End of story.
August 22, 2012 at 1:39 am in reply to: So this is what a 10% chance of precipitation looks like #949319MCL1981ParticipantIt is a not an exact science. It’s a forecast. Not a rule. Especially in the summer time when convective activity can pop up and develop with very little notice. Also, they do not update the forecast every 5 minutes to account for what changed 5 minutes ago. If there was a 10% chance of rain and you got wet, sucks for you. You made the 1 out of 10 chance.
MCL1981ParticipantThe only somewhat logical thing I can think of is that they use the helmet on the road but not the trail. I use the word “logic” loosely in this case.
MCL1981ParticipantToo bad he didn’t photoshop helmets onto them.
MCL1981ParticipantThe video didn’t really say what kind of phone he allegedly tracked down. I wouldn’t be surprised if the phone information he got was not really as special as he thought it was. However, he clearly did his homework on this as much as a civilian could do. And he brought backup. And he brought audio/video. So he was indeed well prepared. The only thing I think he should have done differently (other than tazing him repeatedly), was better timed the confrontation with the police arrival.
MCL1981ParticipantThis is however a good time to mention… You should put some inconspicuous markings on the bike with an engraver. Like your initials and birthday or last four or something. That when the police say “How do you know this bike is yours”, you can point to the personally identifiable information on it. Something more than “Well I bought these cool tires and that is my favorite style fork”.
I think this video would have been much better if he just whipped out a tazer and put him to the ground with it. As soon as he started to run, ZAP. Don’t taze me bro— ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
MCL1981ParticipantThat was awesome.
