Last year we tried the Washington Sailing Marina and found it was actually quite pleasant. You can go out along those floating docks and it’s not super crowded. Plus you end up seeing several sets of fireworks (main ones, ones somewhere by Cap Hill, and National Harbor’s or maybe it was somewhere behind it). Downside is it’s not quite the in-your-face experience of further up the trail. Heading south afterward it’s not too bad since you’re immediately in OT and can go several different ways.

Sounds like this needs to be more of an all afternoon event given the parking situation. Maybe we’ll go down around noonish to get a parking spot. Hopefully a good spot with fast easy evac onto the parkway. Go for a bike ride in the afternoon, maybe into Alexandria for lunch. Then we can go claim our grove along the river as evening approaches. Bring dinner with us. As far as lights to make the return trip to Gravely with the bikes, that will not be an issue. Remember this?

There is no such thing as “fast easy evac” onto the GW Parkway after the fireworks. Seriously, if you drive and park along the parkway (legal or not), you’re in for a long sit in your car. Throw your bikes in the car, go park in Crystal City, and then roll up the trail to whatever spot you like. As noted above, you’ll be picking your way through crowds on the way out, but you’ll be in a position to just jump on 395/110/whatever isn’t GW Parkway after.

(If you’re headed there early enough, the parking lot on the Pentagon side of the footbridge to LBJ park may be a good idea. But it’s probably one shared by many other Washington area fireworks fans. It’s a good staging point if you have picnic stuff you want to keep in the car, and it won’t force you onto GW Parkway later.)

Maybe staying in our secluded grove until after traffic dissipates would be the best plan :p
