ParticipantI went down a couple of times – hard – on ice this winter. I don’t suppose my Conti 4000s were helping. (Or following Pat on his CX bike . . . ).
Not really interested in repeating the experience. So either it’s going to be avoiding ice entirely, or finally paying attention to these things.

ParticipantJoe, when are you going to ban this guy? This was just cruel.

ParticipantA friend of mine just posted a short – but helpfully illustrated – sock review. I’ll definitely be trying the Bridgedales.

ParticipantMight have to try these out. Hmm, I wonder if I know anyone with a set . . .

Also, for everyone’s information, Ecuador lodged a formal complaint when Dirt competed in the jersey above. As part of the settlement agreement, Dirt was required to note in his original posting that the average Ecuadoran is about half his size.

ParticipantGreat to see things coming together. Few of us stay in the same jurisdiction all day, so it’s nice to have one place for a conversation that crosses lines.

ParticipantI quite like it, but it immediately brought to mind that cyclists *don’t* have the same bundle of rights as drivers of cars. In Virginia, if you are on a road in a car, you are not required to keep to the right of the lane (or anywhere in particular, in the lane). As a cyclist, you are (with the usual exceptions). So rights do vary by mode of conveyance, as much as it annoys.

ParticipantHTFU, Dirt! It’s Saturday!

Dave – definitely Gatorskins. There’s some crap road on that route. It’s great fun, though – I’m sure you’ll see parts of DC you’d never have otherwise seen. I did it a few years ago and loved it. (And if you want to talk about doing it with a heavy bike – I did it with a full suspension MTB on 2.2 knobbies (was getting bike-specific miles in, in advance of the SM100).)

ParticipantI’m a fan of bike tossing, but not when it ends up in bike hats. Glad you’re okay, Jen.

ParticipantThanks to everyone who showed last night. It was good to see new faces both at the site visit (we even had a number of trail users who passed by, heard us, and decided to join the conversation) and at Capital City Brewery. I feel that the site visit was quite productive, and am confident it will result in some useful improvements in the relatively near future. The time at Cap City was also well spent. So much so that we’re definitely doing this again.
Also, for those interested, TBD.com reporter Rebecca Cooper joined us for the site visit, and this is the resulting story.

ParticipantI, for one, welcome our new Turkish overlords.

ParticipantNo worries at all (not that you can see this. Unless you’re the Turkish hacker. Are *you* a Turkish hacker, Dirt?).

ParticipantFirst, I’m really sorry to hear about this crash. I was hit earlier this year – no fun at all. I presume that you called the police and have crash report/insurance details. As far as a personal injury lawyer familiar with cycling issues/accidents, I don’t have any firsthand recommendations, but you might want to check with http://cyclinglaw.org/. It’s run by a local attorney (and WABA board member), and part of the mission is to provide referrals in just this sort of situation. The other fellow that comes to mind (and again, I have no first-hand experience) is Doug Landau – http://theathleteslawyer.com/about/.
Best of luck, take care of yourself, and let us know how things go.

ParticipantWoo hoo! Will be there for sure.

ParticipantI wouldn’t worry too terribly much about it. These sorts of racks are used by lots of people, a portion of which are the kinds of people that seem to interact with law enforcement from time to time. I’ve never heard of a ticket for this. That said, I’d probably not roll around with this *and* a BAD COP, NO DONUT bumpersticker.
(And agreed on the merits of this approach to hitch mount. I had an old Saris hitch mount on my last car that sent the bikes swinging so much that every drive seemed a test of faith. If I went back to hitch-mount, I’d get the kind of rack you have.)

ParticipantI’ll take you up on the leadout, and see if I can’t redeem the September sprinting pride for those sharing my given name.
