Can someone recommend a personal injury lawyer?

I was hit by a Honda tonight. The driver failed to indicate and moved across into the bike lane I was in, he knocked me down at around 15mph. I was taken to Virginia Hospital Center and have just been released with bruises, cuts and a very sore neck. My bike is quite badly damaged. Now I need to know what my rights are and how I go about getting compensation to pay for my injuries and my bike. Any and all advice gratefully received.

PS: My helmet prevented a nasty crash from being a really serious one. Please wear your helmet always.

First, I’m really sorry to hear about this crash. I was hit earlier this year – no fun at all. I presume that you called the police and have crash report/insurance details. As far as a personal injury lawyer familiar with cycling issues/accidents, I don’t have any firsthand recommendations, but you might want to check with http://cyclinglaw.org/. It’s run by a local attorney (and WABA board member), and part of the mission is to provide referrals in just this sort of situation. I wanted to bump this old thread in case anyone has had any more recent experiences.

In short, I have a deadbeat driver (an uninsured one, I believe, but that’s a whole further headache with Arlington Police I’m dealing with) trying to weasel out of paying for the repairs on my bike after mowing me down. I’ve been reasonable so far, but it has gone far enough. So I just want to shake the trees a little bit and see if a nasty letter from an attorney will be the little push she needs to write me a check.

If anyone has a referral for someone they’ve used before, I’d be very thankful.

Mark’s advice is good still. I had a matter a year ago and called Doug Landau’s office first. They were unable to help me (not licensed to practice in DC I believe) but they were very helpful in connecting me with other resources that were a good match for my needs.
