ParticipantGreat advice, so far. My only addition is to underline the warning to stay away from Big Wheel Bikes on Lee Highway/Lyon Village. Search “Big Wheel Bikes” on the forum, if you want details.

ParticipantFWIW, Bike parking at Central Library is pretty good. There are several racks at both entrances, and then racks in the parking garage. Car Pool, not so much. My plan is to haul my own onto the patio itself, or lock it to the wire fence around it. They’ve never objected to either, before.

It’s not? Oops.

I can’t think of any other outstanding bike race documentaries.
Overcoming – Team CSC (now Saxo-Tinkoff, Bjarne still at the helm) at the 2004 Tour. *Fantastic*. http://www.pezcyclingnews.com/?pg=fullstory&id=3795
La Course en Tete – The Eddy Merckx Story – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0de_RTkq4U (Better if you’re interested in his legend and some historical appreciation of the sport)
A Sunday In Hell – 1976 Danish film about the 1976 edition of Paris-Roubaix. Love this film. Available in full, here – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4IDCkcnnHg
Hell on Wheels – German language (Eng. subtitled) view of the 2003 Tour. Very good, and a useful step away from the Lance hagiography that some here may be used to – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwtsi1_1KkY

ParticipantAll well explained by Potomac Cyclist. My only addition is to confirm that yes, you *must* finish a stage in order to start the next day. That means crossing the line with your bike (even if you have to carry it). On sprint/flat-finish stages, there’s the 3km rule. That is, if you go down/have a mechanical/etc., you’ll be given the same finish time as the group you were with when the crash/mechanical happened.

ParticipantI’ll be there a bit after 7, so sadly cannot stick to my plan of making someone circling for parking circle a little longer.

I vote for a “pop up” bike rack right in the first parallel parking space, as a way of demonstrating how many bikes you can fit into a single car spot.
Why not? I’d be up for it. Just need to lock the bikes to each other & feed the meter. If I’m there early enough and see an open space in front of Cap City, I’ll start it.

ParticipantThis is perhaps silly, but does anyone want a stack of bike-related mags (or part of one)? Includes some of the usual stuff (Bicycling, Adventure Cyclist), but also Momentum, Peloton, etc. I could throw it in the pannier tomorrow. I also have a bunch of “Bike Rides in DC” (and MD, and VA) type books, if anyone might be interested.

First, there’s really no point busting the pace just to save 5 minutes.
This point also translates to driving cars! Aside from freeways, I’d quite happily slap on (and enforce) a speed limit of 25 in a dense urban area like ours. Drops pedestrian fatalities significantly, and increases travel time minimally.

ParticipantBike Maryland used to be “One Less Car”, and had a nifty green street sign logo. I quite liked it.

ParticipantNeeds to be marked, or someone’s going to mark it for them.

ParticipantMy plan is to drop by both, but if I had to pick one, it would be your event, Kathy. There’s not a lot of overlap between the PPTC crowd and this one (alas), so I wouldn’t worry too much about it.
For those that don’t really follow the Tour, know this – Stage 11 will be completely _)@(#@!#_)( #@# nuts, as pro cycling goes. Totally worth watching in the company of friends.
