I worked a couple of hours late, missing what would have been my Second Third Thursday. Listed in order of occurrence on the MVT:

Gnats!! The first hard freeze cannot come soon enough.

Dozens of riders on a winding dirt trail near the 14th Street Bridge between the Parkway and the MVT. How many years have I ridden by here and not seen that? Is this new?

    Gnats!!

Holy Moley that headlight is aimed high! (shielding eyes)

    Gnats!!

    Gnats redux!!

At the last Third Thursday I was wandering all over Campbell Avenue looking for a place to lock up my bike. I have taken advantage of the floodgates opening and put in my request.

And I think the guys who work at Spokes might be in, but your going to have a hard time getting a business to sign on to sponsoring an event that pairs biking and drinking.

I’ve had a L&M Urban 500 for a couple of years. It’s been great. Good light pattern in a small package. The battery time works fine for my commute, especially with the USB charger port providing a way to recharge it at work. I did leave the port cover off in a blinding rain storm which was not good for the light. It recovered nicely after allowing it to dry out with the cover off for a couple of days. I gave my son a L&M 550 headlight & taillight set for Christmas. That is a v. nice taillight. Also with a USB port. If the 350 is enough light for you, I’d keep it.

What a glorious non-August evening commute today. I followed an electric-assist recumbent trike down the MVT and onto the 4MR trail. Whoa! That thing was fast in the clear straights. Not so much in the turns. I’ve heard about trikes and corners.

So has the secret of the monthly happy hours been revealed? That it’s not really a social gathering of area cyclists, but rather, training sessions for the future defense of Washington D.C. (and Arlington) against a British invasion?

Washington DC and Arlington? From the Post article it obviously doesn’t do too much good to defend Alexandria. We rolled over for the British like a slobbering puppy.

    That’s always a fun spot.

The only time I’ve been hit by a car is right there. It was really just a nudge that bent my rear wheel without knocking me over. It certainly (along with the close by Intersection of Doom) is a place to be watchful.

Where did they put it on Slaters? I was at Buzz the other morning and didn’t notice anything. Although I really don’t ride through there more and it’s more of a driving destination.

Right here. It must not have been installed yet when you were there. It would be hard to miss.

I’ll be coming home to an empty house that day – Mrs KWL will be out of town. I may as well make this my first third Thursday Happy Hour. If weather demands, you may see a second rain cape. Go forth.

I also OFTEN see the Rod Smith look alike. He rides a purplish bridgeston (I think) with some type of mustache handlebar. He rides south on MVT in the late afternoon in the 430-5pm timeframe. I usually see him around Ros. Island or the ramp leading up to Rosslyn. He has a great beard.

Rod Smith? I don’t see it. I assume being mentioned in this thread rather than the “other one” is a good sign. Is this the bike?

Well, its disappointing this is not getting the hits that “Missed connection” does.

Youse: The runner up front and the cyclist behind me as we approached the narrow Memorial Bridge underpass on the MVT. (I have to admit I shoaled the runner, but I thought she slowed up to let me through the underpass first.)
Me: Surprised to find a young kid sideways in the underpass, off his bike and proceeding to walk through, followed by a equally young companion riding slowly behind him.
Youse again: Exhibiting great patience while we waited for the youngsters.
Second youngster: (Brightly) “Thank you”, as they cleared the underpass.

All in all, a fine MVT experience of patience and friendliness.
