I will try to get some while the room is still empty. Or better, with only the Dew in it.

What? It’s not full of bikes already?

APD is ticketing cyclists at the Crystal Dr. and 23rd St. Intersection. They are also handing out warnings to jaywalkers.

Not that I ever ran the light there, but this makes me more than happy Tim pointed out the much better Service Road route through CC.

We moved into Del Ray when the rail yards were still active. Our backdoor neighbor had been a fireman on the old RF&P line. There was a pedestrian bridge over the tracks at the end of our street where railroad employees could walk to work from their homes in Del Ray. At that time we referred to it as “Potomac Yards” not “Yard”. It was certainly big enough for more than one. Does anyone know when the name shifted to the singular? Or perhaps we were just wrong all those years.

Rode Behind the Buildings & Potomac Avenue with emm this evening for a Strava correlation score of 37. It’s nice to have good company on a commute.

I neglected to follow my own advice to never read the comments. I was pleasantly surprised at the general reaction to this.

yes, you can actually get to the service drive without getting on to crystal drive going southbound . Just hook a left into the parking lot/road at the point where the MVT exit/water park hits crystal drive. That parking lot-ish section of the service drive leads right into the main section, and allows you to completely skip Crystal Drive.

OMG, I love this route. Such a nice smooth road with no traffic. I saw one cyclist and no cars on it this evening. BTW, Strava says we had a flyby near the loop from the MVT into Crystal City.

I need to work on my Behind the Buildings segment sprint and try to dethrone that person in 2nd place. :)

So long as you are obeying the law/signs cyclists shouldn’t have any problems riding through the airport. I asked one of the airport’s police officer if it was ok over the summer and he said, “sure, plenty of the employees ride bikes around here.” I can personally attest that one of the FAA facilities at DCA has quite a few people who keep bikes there just so they can go to the main terminal for lunch or meetings (they work in building a fair distance away on the property).

Times have changed. About 20 years ago my daughter and I rode to National Airport to pick up her tickets. As we returned to the MVT an airport officer yelled from his car that bikes weren’t allow on airport property. I like today better.

I found if I enter the service drive right off of the MVT in Crystal City (google map link), you can take it all the way to the 26th and avoid pretty much all of crystal drive. It requires a little bit of biking in a parking lot, but only for a few yards and the parking lot has yet to have a moving vehicle in it. It’s been very safe since the whole service drive is slow and empty.

Oh right. Tim’s route. Perhaps I’ll try that tonight. Thanks for the reminder.

On a related matter for those that take the detour down Crystal Drive, it is scheduled for milling and repaving beginning on the morning of October 9 (tomorrow) from 15th through 26th streets. Completion is scheduled to take several weeks. The work will begin at 15th street progressing south. And as you probably already know, 18th Street is torn up due to its reconstruction between Eads and Crystal Drive. A very unfortunate set of circumstances between this work and the MVT work.

Ooof! Crystal Drive was a mess tonight. I guess it’s being prepped for the milling and repaving. Lots of trucks, cones and blocked off lanes. I certainly would rather negotiated all that on a bike than in a car, but it still wasn’t fun. I’m thinking Eads to 12th to Long Bridge for tomorrow’s commutes. Or I could give up and just walk the chips.

The wood chips are in play. At least on the northern overpass. The ride on the chips isn’t bad, except some people walk, some people ride slowly, some people ride faster. And when you walk your bike you are taking up twice as much trail width on a stupidly narrow path. Overall it means we all go the same speed as the walkers. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I’m taking Potomac Ave – Crystal Drive route from now on.

First ride in on my new bike and it was glorious. Stuff it, metro.

My Strava flyby claims I passed someone name “Tania” just downriver from the IOD this morning. There was a claim it was the first commute on “Warbird”. Was that you? And yes, stuff it Metro, and stuff it driving. Every time I do something other than ride to work, I regret it.

I didn’t bike commute today based on the forecast of 20 mph winds during the evening commuting hours. The winds didn’t materialize. I’m bummed since today’s drizzle is far less than the other two days I biked in the rain this week.

Same here. I find I always regret when I bail out of riding. I need to keep this in mind for Freezing Saddles.
