Took a gander at the trails as I walked down Walter Reed to Shirlington this AM. W&OD hadn’t been touched by any snow removal equipment and looked like a nasty winter wonderland in both directions at the crossing with Walter Reed. The 4MR trail down Arlington Mill from Walter Reed to Shirlington Road was plowed yesterday but unfortunately is mostly covered with a light sheen of black ice (as of 8:30am). There were some sections that were truly clear but most of it was quite slick…and I was walking, not riding. Hopefully the sun today will melt it and dry it out but I’d be careful either way. The streets along the eastern end of the National Mall (Jefferson and Madison) were snowy/slushy/icy mixes. I took one look at them and decided it was actually safer CaBi-ing on the sidewalks in front of the museums.

It looks like I may need to make it to Shirlington (from Bethesda) on Friday. From Google maps, it looks like my best route involves the MVT from Arlington Bridge to the Four Mile Run trail, then up Four Mile Run. Two questions:

    1. What are the conditions on those trails at this point?
    2. How steep is the Four Mile Run Trail? I use an old Trek hybrid that weights 65 pounds with all the accessories I have attached to it, and my experience has been that some of those trails into Virginia from the Potomac go more or less straight up, which can really affect the amount of time I need to allow, but I don’t believe I’ve ever actually been on FMR.

I’d recommend CCT to Water Street/K Street, down Rock Creek Trail to Ohio Drive to 14th Street Bridge to Mount Vernon Trail. The connection across the Four Mile Run Trail with the Shirlington Connector trail are pretty flat. There are some little bumps and gentle grades but nothing god-awful. I’d avoid going over Memorial Bridge to the MVT because I hate dealing with the crossing across the GW Parkway. Hope this helps.

FYI–Bikeshare sent out an email yesterday morning, notifying customers that the system would be closing:

Maybe check your spam filter, or make sure that your email address is up to date in account information?

Got an email today about bringing it back up after 11am but didn’t get anything yesterday.

I guess you missed the Forum posting yesterday. Well, since it was above freezing, you can’t substitute the walk for a sleeze ride. You’ll just need to loop around another block on the way to the Metro this evening. Enjoy.

It appears I did. I don’t check this everyday and with all of the threads, it’s not the easiest thing to peruse. But still and all, CaBi owes it to its users to provide an email if it’s going to shut the system down.

CaBi says they will try to reopen later this morning. But no definite time given.

It would’ve been nice if CaBi had had the decency to send out an email last night or early this morning letting us know that the docking stations were all on lockdown. I got off the train at L’Enfant to do my daily CaBi ride this AM and found that I couldn’t unlock any bikes at 7th & C SW. Thinking it was maybe a fluke at that station, I trudged over to the one at Maryland and Independence SW by the DoEd building and same thing. So I call them and get the “oh yeah, we shut the system down and will reopen whenever.” Did not put me in a warm and fuzzy mood this morning since I was a mile from the office. Had I known, I would’ve stayed on the train and taken it up to the Red Line and transferred there to get close to my office. I wasn’t planning on an additional mile walk today because of the lack of bikes. #CaBiFail!

What is the scale on the “before sunrise” and “after sunset” charts? For example, Rod Smith and Chris Randall are in the 100,000 range for “after sunset” but 100,000 whats?

Looking at the individual leaderboard bar chart, it’s in days/hours/minutes. So that should be a total number of minutes, I presume.

They’d have had to take the broken handlebars and bash me in the knee. Luckily I have two other bikes, so this was only a minor morning delay. ;)

So should I even ask what happened to your hybrid, consularrider?

I’ve done some NOVA CBG rides and anyone can drop in. It’s a great group of people.

Just drop me a note to let me know you’re coming. I’m pretty relaxed for this ride circuit as I’m looking for people who want to ride through the winter.
