ParticipantFor everyone who was on the ride, as well as those who wish they had made it — don’t forget, tomorrow is the last day to turn your picture with the Butterfly Effect mural into a $5 (and maybe even a $1,000) donation to a nonprofit of your choice. BPAC is one of the eligible organizations, and you can find a full list of 250+ here. Email your picture to alxbutterflyeffect[at]gmail.com with the charity in the subject line or text it to 202-681-7594 with the charity. Share it on social media (with the hashtags #inclusiveALX and #butterflyeffect and mention @elizabethforalx and your charity of choice for a chance to win an additional $500 for your nonprofit. The charity with the most pictures submitted will also receive $500.

If you’re interested in helping plan this fun event, we’ll be meeting at the Whole Foods in Pentagon City on Thursday, September 5th at 6:30. We’ll be in the upstairs area located near the bar.
I’m planning to be there, but will likely be a bit late.

ParticipantQuestion for the e-bike experts: my friends have a bike trailer for their 22-month-old twins. But the twins are getting bigger and the hills in Ithaca aren’t getting any flatter, so they’re thinking of getting an e-bike for kid-hauling duties. Is there an e-bike out there that would fit both of them (she’s about 5’4″, he’s about 5’9″) and that would work for pulling a bike trailer? Or should they get a longtail e-bike instead, and if so, which one would you recommend?

If you don’t feel like creating a costume, this pink jersey could be an option.

ParticipantIt was awesome seeing so many forum friends at yesterday’s ride, including drevil, Fast Friendly Guy, KWL, ltierstein, MrTinDC, rachelwright, Reba, rootchopper, and streetsmarts! Special thanks to caseykane50 and Emm for agreeing to be ride leaders and attempting to make sense out of my 20 pages of research notes, and to CBGanimal, Jessica Hirschhorn, Judd, and Steve O for sweeping and keeping everyone safe.

Heads up – DCist included the ride in its weekly “5 Ways to Have a Totally Free Weekend” roundup (https://dcist.com/story/19/08/30/5-ways-to-have-a-totally-free-weekend-around-d-c-36/). It notes what was in the original post of “registration encouraged but you can show up day of” so numbers may continue to increase…
Yes, and the Post’s Going Out Guide picked it up too. Gulp. I just updated the Eventbrite listing to “sold out,” so we’ll see what happens.

lol best of luck you guys. somebody should warn misha’s.
Not to worry, I already contacted Misha’s and Port City. Only fair to let them know that a horde of thirsty cyclists is headed their way.

Sigh – regrettably I have to back out… too much other stuff suddenly piling into this one, pre-vacation weekend… Hope to catch a redo another time!
Thanks for letting me know! Sorry to miss you on the ride. Good luck packing, and have a great trip!

ParticipantA colleague gave me a Kermit Pez dispenser today, so I guess that’s a sign I should be Kermit. Plus, that’ll allow me to reuse the green base layer from my 2017 costume. Now I’m off to find a Bluetooth speaker so that I can play “Bein’ Green” and “Rainbow Connection” on an infinite loop during the ride…

I heard 60 people are currently registered for this ride.
To make things more manageable, we’re going to split into three groups. Caseykane50 and Emm have both graciously agreed to lead a group (thanks again — you’re the best!).
If you’re thinking of going and haven’t registered yet, please register so that I know whether to line up more ride leaders and marshals. Thanks.

ParticipantBump.
The ride and picnic are happening this Sunday. I’ll probably bake cookies for the potluck, and I’m happy to entertain requests for particular flavors.

komorebi,
Thank you for all your research and leading the ride. We had fun, enjoyed talking with many people and learned some interesting things. Thanks, bikesnick! It was great seeing you and so many other forum friends on the ride. I was amazed at the number of people who came out despite the heat and humidity, and impressed by how chill everyone was during the breaks when we were waiting to regroup. Thanks to everyone for their patience, and special thanks to Emm, CBGanimal, and caseykane50 for marshaling and keeping us all safe. Here’s Emm in action:

I also enjoyed the two random friendly encounters we had on the ride:
- As we were biking north on Commonwealth Avenue past Cora Kelly School, an Alexandria PD cruiser was coming the other way. The officer got on his PA system and said, “Good morning, and have a great ride.”
- As we were gathering in front of T.C. Williams High School, a man living in a house across the street came out on his porch and invited us to come over if we needed a pit stop.
