Presidential history rde in Alexandria, 7/4

Which Alexandria neighborhood was home to not one but two future U.S. presidents? Which president nearly got into a fistfight while visiting Alexandria? Where was one of President Lincoln’s closest friends killed? Come find out on this July 4 presidential history ride.

When: Thursday, July 4, at 9:00 a.m.
Where: Meet at Market Square, at the corner of King St and Fairfax St. The route is about 12 miles, with a mix of trails and streets and some hills: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30301125.
Who: This no-drop ride is organized by Alexandria’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (and yours truly!) and is open to everyone.

Details and registration at http://bit.ly/July4ride. Registration is encouraged, but you are also welcome to join the ride on the day of.

We’ll probably grab tacos at District Taco after the ride. All are welcome to attend.

*For those of you who participated in my July 4 presidential history ride last year, this year’s ride has all-new stops.

Fixed! And thanks for the tip. I saw the typo in the title after I posted, but I had assumed there was no way for me to fix it.

Thanks, bikesnick! It was great seeing you and so many other forum friends on the ride. I was amazed at the number of people who came out despite the heat and humidity, and impressed by how chill everyone was during the breaks when we were waiting to regroup. Thanks to everyone for their patience, and special thanks to Emm, CBGanimal, and caseykane50 for marshaling and keeping us all safe. Here’s Emm in action:

I also enjoyed the two random friendly encounters we had on the ride:

• As we were biking north on Commonwealth Avenue past Cora Kelly School, an Alexandria PD cruiser was coming the other way. The officer got on his PA system and said, “Good morning, and have a great ride.”
• As we were gathering in front of T.C. Williams High School, a man living in a house across the street came out on his porch and invited us to come over if we needed a pit stop.

Also, while we were regrouping at Tennesee Ave and Old Dominion Blvd, a woman walking her dog told us the house on N Overlook Dr was used as a hospital during the Civil War and some other interesting facts about the church.
