ParticipantI take Case Bridge. Trying to get on to the sidewalk at the Fish Market has become a game of whack-a-mole since much of the parking lot is now under construction, drivers trying to get into the parking lot are insane, and the rush hour traffic is murderous. Have done it a couple of times recently and decided it wasn’t worth the hassle.

ParticipantI’m in!!! Not so sure about sweet potato donuts though. Veggies don’t belong in a donut, just sayin’

Do what I do: Grab the bike with your left hand on the bars and right hand on the down tube near-ish the bottom bracket. Put your right shoulder under the nose of the saddle. Pivot the bike up with your right hand and carry it with the nose of the saddle on your shoulder.
Kind of like this (best image I could find on the internet… I will have to have someone take one of me carrying my bike up my stairs at work or home):
I just tried this method of carrying my bike. It mostly works except that I can’t use the saddle as a fulcrum because it is positioned so close to the frame I can’t really get my shoulder into the nook comfortably. I suppose I could loosen up the post if need be but given how short the nose is I don’t think it would add much comfort. That said, I would have felt more comfortable walking across the stepping stones holding it this new way. Unfortunately my bike shoes are very slippery so I’d rather just bike the long way if I can.

ParticipantSpotted a couple rolls of bike themed wrapping paper yesterday at Marshall’s Pentagon City. Located in a couple of bins at the start of the register “chute” for people waiting to pay.

ParticipantI tried a Halo but didn’t like the indentation mark it made on my forehead. Took forever to go away so now I just use a regular headband if needed.

Have you seen it? They raised the entire crossing and painted the trail through the intersection. Plus, because of the new angle, drivers can see there are no stop signs. I personally think it’s better than zebra stripes (which are routinely ignored).
Haven’t seen it in person yet; only Bob’s pics. While 80% of drivers will drive cautiously, leave it to the remaining 20% to screw it up for the rest of humanity.

ParticipantWelcome JQ,
Thanks for saying hi! Sounds like you fit well within the DMV cycling community. I highly recommend attending a few social outings to be able to match faces with avatars, recognize folks at organized rides, etc. Helps makes the forum more personal. You will be surprised by how many people you recognize while riding after a while (Judd seems omnipresent!).

ParticipantIf they were unwilling to move the trail to follow the river this appears to be the second best outcome. Will be interesting to see how well cars are looking out for cyclists/peds. Would be better if they painted crosswalk lines in at the crossing too instead of just relying on stop signs (drivers may interpret the intersection as a 4-way stop intersection).

I was the one who posted. And legislation has been passed to make it legal, but the legislation has not yet been signed by the governor.
Thanks for the clarification. Insane that the DMV has such a patchwork of conflicting laws.

ParticipantI could have sworn that a recent thread on this site said it was legal for cyclists to ride through crosswalks in MD. I believe a link to the relevant source was cited too.

ParticipantThanks for all of your hard work in making the DMV a better place. Seattle is a pretty awesome place so I’m sure you will enjoy it. Am envious that you won’t have to endure humidity any more. Probably best you leave now before DC implodes from Trump’s and the GOP’s machinations. Of course you’re biking there right?!

ParticipantI dunno. Maybe stop, dismount, and place your bike perpendicular to the lane so the salmoning cyclist has to make an effort to go around you?
Perhaps we should be happy such folks aren’t driving cars?!

ParticipantI highly recommend Spokes on Quaker Lane. Have been going there for years. They always seem to be honest about what needs to be replaced/repaired now versus later and I don’t feel like they have ever oversold me on services. They have also found stuff that I completely overlooked.
I’ve never been to Contes so can’t comment on their advice.

ParticipantMore examples of why peds and cyclists have to join forces and fight for policy changes instead of fighting each other.
It’s all the more frustrating since technology and know-how is readily available; the blockages are due to funding and willpower. But that’s what happens when you continually cut government funding….

Participant^^It’s generally better to cut through Columbia Island, through the Pentagon, then take Army Navy Drive to 4MR near Shirlington. Or cut through Crystal City and head south depending on where you are going. I avoid that stretch of the MVT like the plague even though it is only 2 miles away from where I live. Total chaos there.
