So whatever happened in the end to the driver who hit you? I know you reported it to the police. Did his/her insurance company ever contact you?

ParticipantGood god! I can’t even claim to having gotten out of bed every single day for three years! Superwoman!

ParticipantWow, I’m amazed so many people can do a long workout without eating esp in the morning. I have never been able to but then again, I rarely eat much for dinner (lunch is my big meal of the day). All the articles I’ve read this evening say it is really important to have some carbs (short and long acting) in you about 60 minutes before exercising and then protein/carbs after the exercise (pref within 30-45 minutes) to help your muscles recover quicker. Both meals can be rather small so you don’t overdo the calories.
I’m using the MyFitnessPal app. Makes calorie/carb counting easy and links automatically with Strava. It’s remarkable how little 1,200 calories gets you for the entire day. Anyway, my average mph and endurance are up, I’ve gained some muscle, and I’ve dropped nine pounds. Still have a long way to go though. If the work hours weren’t so long I’d be further along but nothing I can do about that right now…

ParticipantI should have added that I’m restricting calories and eating low carb since I’m losing weight so am already somewhat hungry by the time I wake up. Actually one of the reasons I’m exercising is that I get an add’l calorie allowance!
I think I’m going to try Tim’s idea adding a banana or fruit (fast carbs).

Instant breakfast in warm milk. Fast absorption and easy digestion*. Room temp water during. Eat the real meal after and enjoy it even more as a good workout makes food taste better.
*For most folks YMMV.
Do you mean instant oatmeal or the powered stuff?
I’m wondering if I could have something by my bedside that I could quickly eat then nod off for 45 more minutes before getting up. Kinda dangerous though since it may screw up my sleeping schedule even more.
I can’t stand energy gels. Augh. Nasty. Maybe pure maple syrup? I’ve heard that is the “new cool thing” on the block.
I wish I could telework more. It would “buy” me some morning time.

ParticipantUmmmm, I applaud your efforts but I strongly suspect it will become a parking lane within a matter of hours.

No, no, no!!!!!!!!! That is the worst possible spot. That area is total chaos during daylight hours all day on weekends and afternoons/evenings during the week. It is like proposing a bus stop in the middle of Times Square. I thought Gravelly Pt was supposed to get a new bike path that led away from the crowds? We need that more than a Cabi station.
How about locating the station near the boat ramp or the other side of the intersection from the toilets.
The NPS is concerned about blocking the view but unconcerned about stinky, unsanitary port-o-potties?! Bizarre.

ParticipantYes, you can ride trikes on all of the trails here. I would not, however, try to cross Roosevelt bridge with one because it is so narrow.
I don’t know of any place that rents trikes in the local area. Best place to go for trying out lots of trikes is Mt. Airy Bicycles in MD (about 45 minutes from Arlington on a Saturday) and/or Bikes at Vienna along the W&OD. I found the former to be far more knowledgeable and useful but it’s best to try out both.
Trikes are easy to ride in low traffic areas or along busy roads with good sight lines. I would not ride one in downtown DC but am fine around Arlington/Alexandria. It helps if you are used to riding around cars otherwise you may wish to stick to the trails till you get used to the lower profile.
The other thing to know about trikes is that it is hard to get hurt if you tip over given that you are only six inches or so from the ground but they will tip over if you take a sharp turn and do not lean to the side to counteract the wheels trying to come off the ground. If you are moderately flexible the leaning is easy but you need to make it a reflex. I rode my trike for the first time in two months due to the nice weather and forgot to lean when I tried to did a u-turn. Opps, when right over. Neither me nor the bike were hurt at all; just my pride. I’m sure it looked rather funny to the bystanders. Just wanted to mention that since you said you have balance issues.
Trikes are slower than regular bikes, esp up hills. They also work the muscles differently. I bought my trike from Mt. Airy last fall but am having knee problems when using it. Still need to figure out what the issue is. Other than that it is super comfortable and provides a much different riding experience than the upright.
Lastly, please note that trikes are generally more expensive to buy and equip than uprights. But they hold their value well.

ParticipantYes, and it is 61 degrees(!) right now on 2/6/17 at 5:00 pm and is expected to hit 69 tomorrow!!! I’m totally down with sending the rest of the world our cold and snow.

I really like my Spec. Flux Elite. Beam pattern is so much nicer than any flashlight style reflector/lens bike light. I am keeping tabs on the new Exposure Strada 800 and 1200. I’m more fond of the Exposure mounting system than the Specialized.
I have an earlier version of the Strada and like it very much (bought it about 5 years ago). The beam is cut off at the top so as to minimize blinding oncoming traffic but I still have to be sure it is pointed down slightly on the trails (I point it straight ahead in car traffic however). It’s a really bright, broad light. The mounting system is fantastic (easy on/off and very secure, no rattles ever). Long battery life. My only complaint is the weight and size; it’s possible the latest versions are smaller. I also use a smaller Exposure light on my helmet; don’t remember the name. The company makes a very good product.
