This wormhole invites one to do a little cross country to connect parking lots. The win is that by doing this, the rider can avoid Rt. 50 when going from Jermantown Rd to Waples Mill. The path takes you over near the NRA building, so I’m calling it “Guns & NoRoads”

George C. Yeonas park, home of Vienna Little League. When we first moved back to this area, my son was 4 and I was so excited for him to start T-ball with this league. Alas, all he wanted to do was play in the dirt in his white pants. Today, he is an avid mountain biker, so maybe that propensity for the dirt stuck with him.

A great mural to find. It’s part of a series on the wall of a new development in Fairfax. There are no businesses in there yet, but it looks SO much better than it did before the development. The area is called Point 50.

Do we call it “Ameridog Gothic” or “American Dogthic”?

Darn it, I forgot the bike again. I’ll have to go back.

    1/12/2021 – Bat

Like Bikesnick, I went to Yeonas Park. And like him, I found that the little batter was BYOB. Since bringing my own would violate the rules (and who knew anyway – at that point I was 8 miles from home too), I went to the nearby brush and found an appropriate sized bat for him. After the photo, I left the bat for others. I just had no idea the other would be someone playing this game! The sun angle makes it a little difficult to see, but it’s definitely there!

And for extra “screw up” points, somehow I first posted in the main Freezing Saddles thread and have no idea how to delete it. sigh.

    1/11/2021: Plane

Planes abound in College Park, MD, because we are the home to the oldest continually operating airport in the world. It was was established in August 1909 by the United States Army Signal Corps to serve as a training location for Wilbur Wright to instruct two military officers to fly in the government’s first airplane. You can find out more information here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/College_Park_Airport

For my photo I chose to take a picture of one of these simple silhouettes painted on the pavement of the nearby bike trail – which happens to be part of the Anacostia tributary trail system and thus REALLY accessible to any bicyclist in the DC area. How cool is that? :) Anyway, there are a series of these silhouettes which help to lead the curious hiker/biker to the airport and the connected museum.

I used to love that part of the Cider Ride. It was easy to get distracted!

Found near the river in Old Town Alexandria. Didn’t see a plaque so don’t have any info on it. Kind of cool though.

Looks kinda like an anchor-ish thing, doesn’t it? One of the things I find most frustrating is trying to find out more about the public art I see. In Reston we are fortunate to have a lot of it, and most of it is signed with artist/material/etc info. We even have bike routes to see it the various pieces. (http://www.publicartreston). But when I look in other communities, I’m having a tough time finding some entity — gov’t or quasi gov’t or private — that even LISTS the pieces. I am going to try to use the photos from this game to devise some routes for the summer when we can hopefully ride as groups again. It would just be great to find art piece maps or lists or info. :-)

Curiosity about it is not permitted? I’m trying to figure out whether it was “placed” or “naturally occurring”.

Is it an actual art installation? It definitely masquerades as … urban something or other!

At the Pony Barn Recreation Area (not a park, Cathy) in Reston. These artistic bike racks were partially paid for by Reston Bike Club. They mirror the history of the area.

    1/10/21 Nut

Fairfax County has 427 parks, but I couldn’t find a complete list so I couldn’t zero in on one that featured the name “nut”.

Next I looked at all the parks within a 15 mile circle around my home — there are many, but not ONE has the word “nut” in its name.

My riding partner found a brewery to visit that had a nut in its logo, so we rode down there. But she gets that photo.

So … here’s what I saw along the way. This is where Tapawingo crosses Nutley in Vienna, heading to the fantastic connector trail between Vienna and City of Fairfax.

Given my history, tomorrow I’ll see nothing BUT nuts!
