I’m glad you found this one. It is called “Birdbath” and is one of several pieces by artist Valerie Theberge in Reston. (The newest is the “Continuum” on Sunrise Valley as part of the wall for the Lincoln property. There’s also a bench in the round she did there.) I think this placement of this piece is unfortunate as you really have to know it’s there to find it.

I developed the Art Rides for Public Art Reston. This is on the South ride as well as the “whole enchilada” ride.

    1/15 bagels

I was excited for this one because I’ve been wanting to try Bagel Uprising in Alexandria. Today’s work schedule allowed me to indulge in a longer morning ride to grab a bagel before work so I headed on down. What bagel shop doesn’t open until 8? Oh well, I will have to try again on a weekend.

Oh bummer! That does sound late for a bagel shop – but maybe they adjusted their hours b/c fewer commuters? At least you got a great photo. And something to look forward to!

    Wikipedia’s 20th birthday is tomorrow (January 15), and I’m sponsoring a rapid-response, one-day-only pointless-prize in honor of it.

The task: On January 15, while you are out and about on your bike, take a picture of a place that has a Wikipedia page and share one fact about that place using #Wikipedia20.

Pro tip: If you need help finding a place, use the Wikipedia app on your phone. The toolbar on the bottom has a “Places” button, which will open a map showing you all the spots near you with Wikipedia pages.

Scoring: I will choose a winner based on the creativity of your photo AND the pub-quiz-worthiness of the fact you include. If there are a lot of great entries, I will award a second and third place prize as well.

    The prize: Some Wikipedia swag

Full disclosure: I work for the Wikimedia Foundation and edit Wikipedia, but I am doing this in my personal capacity.

I used the #wikipedia20 hashtag on my Strava ride title – hoping that’s the way to do this. Thanks for putting up a prize. Sorry mine wasn’t more exciting!

There is a wikipedia page for Fair Lakes, VA which is where the photo of the public art (girl throwing frisbee for dog) was taken today. Pub quiz fact: On 1 December 2020, a woman reversed her car into the Whole Foods located in Fair Lakes damaging Christmas decorations and Amazon lockers. (not very interesting, but apparently BIG news in Fair Lakes).

Public Art – this time with bike in photo. So this time it counts. This bigger than life sculpture is at Fair Lakes.

    1/15/21 Bagel

This place is on the “Road Food” list according to my riding partner. Their deli is fantastic! Chutzpah Deli in Fairfax County, near Fair Oaks Mall.

Re sideways pic, this seems to be a common phenomena with droids as opposed to iPhones. Perhaps fellow droid users can offer up a fix? Change the file name, or save as a different file type (.png vs .jpeg)??

    #publicartfinder on!

Re: sideways. I am using an iPhone, so droid info won’t help me. I’m revisiting in case anyone else is having problems. What has helped was something I read on a forum that says the “normal” orientation for a photo for the iphone is with the home button on your right edge (landscape orientation). If I remember to do that, it seems to work but only if I use the on screen photo. If I try to use the side buttons, it goes wonky again. It’s something to do with the way this forum receives the data. So basically, as long as I keep my head on straight and remember to orient properly and push the right button, it works well. I wonder if that is true in life …

The Reston pathway system is world-class in terms of connectivity within Reston. It is maintained by a very responsive maintenance crew and in the summer the paths are a refuge for those on 2 wheels.

This wormhole connects parts of the Turquoise Trail that crosses Steeplechase Drive by going UNDER the road. While Steeplechase is generally a low-traffic road and there’s a crosswalk across it to continue on the Trail, one side is distinctly UN-wheel friendly. Note: do not use this wormhole when it’s been raining for 2 or 3 days.

The reason to use the wormhole:

The location of the wormhole. To see it in context, use google maps to search “Steeplechase Dr” and turn on the bicycling function. The bright green lines that go over Steeplechase are the indicator you’ve found the area. Just don’t take those. :-)

If my bike helmet and I count as bike in the photo, here’s my submission for the day. If not, it was still fun.

This butterfly is painted on the wall of the Herndon Art Space. It begs for one to pose in the middle of the wings – hence my selfie.
Seeing as I can’t get the photo to flip, how about “Suspended Animation” for a title.

Nope, not a museum — this photo was taken at the “A Place Through Time” timeline-plaque thingy that is at the southeast corner of the Torpedo Factory Art Center. See details here. “Celebration” actually appears three times on the plaque, but the Lafayette one seemed the most appropriate for today’s game.

Cool thanks – we’re going to be at the Torpedo Factory on Saturday — will check it out!

And a few years from now, this post might have a different name.

Don’t worry Alan, I’m with you! The people who embrace the “freezing” part of freezing saddles are the ones who ride early early. It’s just a game, with pointless prizes and those of us who ride in daylight (indeed wait to ride until it’s warmer) are still getting out to enjoy the day on a bike. That in itself is a WIN. I also think that back in the day when lots of people commuted by bike in the pre-dawn hours, bonus points for finding something first were a nice way to encourage them to keep it up! I’m grateful I don’t have to commute in the bitter cold!

1/14/2021 — “Benedict Arnold” anagram word. Here’s another “celebration,” this time for a different figure from the Revolutionary War:

And here’s the full text, in case it’s hard to read in the photo:

    1824
    Hero of the American Revolution

The Marquis de Lafayette, hero of the American Revolution, visits Alexandria for a Grand Reception and Celebration held in his honor and, while here, calls on the widow of his old comrade Henry Lee. Lafayette, the last surviving general of the Revolutionary War, was invited by President James Monroe to be “The Nation’s Guest,” attending parades, ceremonies and receptions in every state.

Did you find a museum actually open? One of my favorite artifacts at Mount Vernon is the key to the Bastille that Lafayette gifted to George Washington. They were both true statesmen. Flawed humans of course, but I think we all fall into that category. Thanks for this photo!
